VADODARA- European plane maker Airbus and India’s legacy industrialists Tata have established the country’s pioneering private-sector aircraft manufacturing ecosystem for the C295 program.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) will receive domestically assembled C295 aircraft starting in 2026, while both companies explore global export opportunities.
Tata Airbus C295 Export
Tata Advanced Systems Limited partners with Airbus to manufacture 56 C295 aircraft, marking Airbus’s first complete production line outside its home countries. This collaboration positions India as the world’s largest C295 operator.
Following this, they are exploring ways to keep production running with export seems a feasible option. This will position India from being the major aircraft importing company to the one that also exports planes.
However, India lacks a major production line for commercial airliners. However, the government wants Airbus and Boeing to establish a production line in the country as Indian airlines have placed a significant order of over 1,200 planes making it economical to establish a domestic Final assembly line.
Also, there are talks to make a passenger variant of C295. Air India (AI) might operate them to strengthen their regional operations.
Airbus already has final assembly lines in China. Further, they also produce A220s in Canada and Mobile, Alabama (United States).
Boeing mainly produces aircraft in the United States, but they do have many parts production factories across the world.
The C295 fleet will modernize the Indian Air Force’s capabilities by replacing outdated Avro transport aircraft. The aircraft’s adaptable design supports military transport and humanitarian missions across India’s diverse geographical conditions.
Key Features of the Partnership:
- First private-sector aircraft manufacturing venture in India
- Complete production line deployment by Airbus outside home countries
- IAF to receive 56 C295 aircraft
- Export potential to establish India in the global aerospace market
- Enhanced military and humanitarian mission capabilities
- Domestic assembly and manufacturing ecosystem
The collaboration advances India’s defense manufacturing capabilities while creating opportunities in the international aerospace sector. The C295’s versatile configuration serves both military transport requirements and humanitarian operations across challenging terrains.
Made in India
The C295 program creates an extensive manufacturing ecosystem across India, involving raw material sourcing and production of 13,000 complex components.
The Vadodara Final Assembly Line facility receives assembled components for aircraft integration, final assembly, and testing procedures. This integrated network establishes India as a global aircraft production center, developing a robust supply chain for future Airbus and international customer orders.
Strategic Manufacturing Locations:
- Nagpur: Parts manufacturing hub
- Bangalore: Components production center
- Hyderabad: Parts manufacturing and Main Component Assembly
- Vadodara: Final Assembly Line operations
Airbus commits to routing future C295 orders through Indian facilities, strengthening the program’s long-term viability. The complete production ecosystem attracts aerospace investments and integrates India into global supply chains.
The partnership advances India’s position in international aerospace manufacturing while reinforcing Tata’s leadership in advanced manufacturing capabilities. This manufacturing network supports both domestic requirements and positions India as a competitive aerospace export hub.
