FORT WORTH- Two American Airlines (AA) flights operated using Airbus A319 aircraft made emergency landings on October 23, 2024, due to engine stall and fire issues.
The flights involved in this emergency are AA1087 and AA1594, both domestic flights operated near the east coast of the United States.
American Airlines Flights Emergency
Let’s start with AA1087. According to FlightRadar24 data, American Airlines flight AA1087 with 116 individuals took off from Portland International Jetport (PWM) runway 11 at 2:12 PM local time and was bound for Philadelphia (PHL).
Immediately after takeoff, the flight crew received a fire warning from the right engine. Following this they stopped their climb and landed safely back at Portland at 2:34 PM local time.
The aircraft involved in the incident is Airbus A319-112 as mentioned earlier, registered as N704US. Further, it is a 25.9-year-old aircraft powered by CFM56 engines.
The aircraft N704US is still on the ground in Portland as of October 25, 2024.
Second Incident
Similarly, on the same day, American Airlines flight AA1594 took off from Chicago O’Hare (ORD) at 6:47 PM local time and was bound for Pittsburg (PIT). After being airborne for around 20 minutes, the flight crew reported an engine stall.
Following this, the crew decided to divert to a nearby airport, John Glenn Columbus Intl Airport (CMH) and it landed safely at 8:47 PM local time, after being airborne for an hour. There were 122 people onboard the aircraft and all were safe.
The flight was operated by A319-100, registered as N9010R. Further, it is an 11.1-year-old aircraft and is powered by CFM56 engines.
Planespotters.net data shows that American Airlines is the largest operator of A319 aircraft with 133 aircraft in its fleet and out of these 123 are active as of October 25, 2024.

The issues with aircraft engines are common with thousands of aircraft in the sky at any given time in the world. But some are so serious that they need immediate attention such as diversion and emergency landings.

Well, an American Airlines flight AA1849 from Charlotte (CLT) to Portland (PDX) with Airbus A321 aircraft on Jan 25, 2024, reported that no.1 engine stalled mid-air and they were forced to make an emergency landing at Minneapolis (MSP).
