BOSTON- Atlanta-based carrier, Delta Air Lines (DL) Airbus A330 Number 1 engine caught fire at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) Yesterday (October 22, 2024).
The incident occurred when Delta was preparing for its flight DL112 from Boston to Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO), Rome.
Delta A330 Engine Fire
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has reported the incident and has begun the investigation.
FAA wrote on Aviation Accidents and Incidents that,
“The crew of Delta Air Lines Flight 112 reported an engine issue before departure at Boston Logan International Airport around 7 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Oct. 22. Fire and Rescue extinguished a fire on the No.1 engine and the aircraft safely taxied to the gate. The Airbus A330 was departing for Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport in Italy.“
According to Flight Radar 24 data, Delta Air Lines flight DAL112 pushed back from Terminal E Gate E5 at 10:13 PM UTC.
The aircraft began taxing (Aircraft taxiing occurs when planes move independently on the ground using the engine’s power) at around 10:23 PM UTC.
But at around 10:28 UTC, the aircraft stopped for a brief moment at the taxiway and towed for pushback and later it started taxing.
At around 11:02 PM UTC, while rolling down on the Runway 4R-22L, at 27 knots the aircraft rejected the takeoff amid engine fire on the No.1 engine.
They contacted the ATC and they sent ground vehicles and a firefighting team to extinguish the fire. The aircraft was on the runway for around 40 minutes before taxing again at 11:42 PM UTC.
The plane taxied back to the isolation area near Terminal E and passengers deboarded the aircraft safely.
The aircraft involved in the incident is Delta Air Lines Airbus A330-323, registered N815NW. Further, it is a 17.8-year-old aircraft and is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW4168 engines.

UPDATE: Delta Spokesperson said, “Delta flight 112 from Boston (BOS) to Rome (FCO) canceled takeoff after the crew received an indication of an engine issue. Delta teams are working to re-accommodate our customers and we apologize for the inconvenience and delay.”
There were 152 passengers onboard the aircraft and all were safe. Further, A330 was brought in for further inspection, where Delta teams determined additional maintenance was required following this the flight was canceled.
Similar Incident
Delta Air Lines flight DL217 aborted takeoff at Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS) in Dakar on October 19, 2024. The Boeing 767-300ER encountered technical issues when it was preparing to return to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).
Senegal’s transport ministry confirmed the emergency stop affected 216 passengers aboard the flight. The pilot implemented emergency procedures without causing injuries to passengers or crew members.
Delta Media Relations told us that a bird strike triggered the takeoff rejection. The airline confirmed passenger accommodation arrangements and apologized for travel disruptions.
The incident involved a 26.7-year-old Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, registered as N199DN, equipped with Pratt and Whitney engines. Senegal’s national civil aviation agency initiated an investigation into the event.
In a separate incident, on August 4, 2024, a Delta Air Lines flight from Boston (BOS) to Rome was struck by lightning mid-air, following this, the flight crew decided to make an emergency landing back at Boston.
