DAKAR- Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines (DL) flight DL217 from Blaise Diagne International Airport, Dakar (DSS) to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) reject the takeoff at Dakar on October 19, 2024.
According to the West African nation’s transport ministry, the Delta flight rejected the takeoff due to technical issues caused by a bird strike.
Delta Flight Reject Takeoff
According to flightradar24 data, Delta flight rejected the takeoff at a high speed of around 150 knots and came to a stop just end of the runway.
The flight was scheduled to depart Dakar at 11:05 AM and arrive in New York at 3:50 PM local time.
Senegal transport ministry reported that ‘Delta flight carrying 216 passengers executed an emergency stop during takeoff due to a technical issue. The pilot successfully halted the aircraft without causing injuries to passengers or crew.’
Senegal’s national civil aviation agency has launched an investigation into the event. The Bureau of Investigations and Analysis will also conduct a separate inquiry to determine the cause of the technical malfunction.
We have reached out to Delta Air Lines to find out the exact cause of the technical issue and we are awaiting their response, will update you once we get the update.
It looks like a serious incident as the aircraft is still on the ground at Dakar at the time of publishing the article.
UPDATE: The Delta Media Relations team replied to Aviation A2Z and wrote, “Delta Air Lines flight 217 experienced a bird strike during takeoff. All passengers were accommodated and arrived at their destination. We apologize to our customers for the delay and any inconvenience to their travel.”
The aircraft involved in the incident is a Boeing 767-300ER, registered as N199DN. Further, it is a 26.7 years old aircraft and is powered by Pratt and Whitney engines.
You all will be surprised to know that Delta has a 34.5-year-old 767-300ER aircraft. Most probably the oldest in a fleet of passenger carriers.
Similar Incident
Delta Air Lines flight DL1505 from Orlando (MCO) to Atlanta (ATL) aborted takeoff due to mechanical issues on October 3, 2024. A passenger first reported the incident on Delta’s Reddit forum, providing detailed information about the event.
The Boeing 757-300 aircraft initiated takeoff on runway 35L but quickly aborted, employing brakes and reverse thrust to decelerate. The plane exited the runway at taxiway E after coasting to a stop.
The pilot initially cited a mechanical issue as the cause for the rejected takeoff. Further investigation revealed a hydraulic failure in the left engine as the specific problem.
Mechanics met the aircraft at the gate to address the issue. Passengers were asked to disembark to facilitate the replacement of the hydraulic pump and subsequent testing.
Following the pump replacement and a successful ground run, engineers cleared the aircraft for flight. Passengers reboarded, and the flight departed four hours and thirty minutes behind schedule.
The Orlando to Atlanta route is reportedly Delta’s busiest domestic service, typically operating at full capacity. This incident highlights the importance of rigorous maintenance protocols and swift problem-solving to minimize disruptions on high-traffic routes.
Rejected takeoffs, while not uncommon, require extreme caution from pilots to prevent loss of control and potential accidents.
