PUNE- The Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Cooperation from Pune, Murlidhar Mohol was present at the event at Pune Airport (PNQ) as the new terminal became operational Today (July 14, 2024).
The facility’s inauguration was marked by the launch of direct flights to Delhi (DEL) and Bhubaneswar (BBI), ushering in a new era of improved connectivity for the region.
Pune Airport New Terminal
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and local MP Murlidhar Mohol presided over the landmark event, personally handing out the first boarding pass to a passenger. This symbolic gesture underscored the terminal’s official transition into active service as travelers embarked on the inaugural flights to the national capital and Odisha’s capital city.
Highlighting the significance of the occasion, Mohol stated, “A historic day for Pune! Inaugurated by Hon. PM Narendra Modi ji, the operations of Pune Intl Airport’s brand new terminal building commenced today.”
He emphasized the terminal’s impressive capacity, noting that it can cater to 90 lakh passengers annually within its 52,000 square meter expanse.
The minister also outlined the terminal’s state-of-the-art facilities, including 34 check-in counters and 12 X-ray baggage scanners, designed to enhance the passenger experience.
Mohol praised the terminal’s aesthetic appeal, describing it as “an iconic example of how technology meets Pune’s rich cultural heritage through the stunning aesthetic creativity showcased in the terminal.”
Air India’s (AI) flight AI858 to Delhi and Air India Express’ I5320 to Bhubaneswar, which further connects to Kolkata (CCU) claimed the distinction of being one of the first flights to depart from the new facility.
These inaugural routes symbolize the expanded connectivity options now available to Pune’s residents and visitors.
423 Crore Facility
The new terminal, which was e-inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 10 along with several other airport projects across India, represents a significant investment in the city’s infrastructure.
Built for Rs 423 crore, the 51,595 square meter building blends functionality with cultural representation, featuring murals that depict the region’s rich heritage.
Passengers using the new terminal will benefit from modern amenities including 10 aerobridges, five baggage carousels, and 25 self-check-in stations, all designed to streamline the travel process and reduce wait times.
As Pune’s new airport terminal begins its operations, it stands as a testament to the city’s growing importance as a hub for business, education, and tourism.
The enhanced facilities and increased capacity are expected to not only improve the travel experience for passengers but also contribute to the economic growth of Pune and the surrounding Western Maharashtra region.
