BENGALURU- India’s third busiest airport, Kempegowda International Airport (BLR), Bengaluru will handle 90-100 million passengers with the help of Terminal 3, which it plans to open by 2030.
Currently, Karnataka’s major airport is handling 439,524 metric tonnes of cargo, which is around 7% more than last year, BLR’s Chief Operation Officer (COO), Satyaki Raghunath told Deccan Herald.
Bengaluru Airport New Terminal
Starting August of this year, Bengaluru Airport will begin the major overhaul of Terminal 1. Currently, they are preparing the airport in such a manner that there is minimal impact to passengers travelling to and from the airport.
Mr. Raghunath said that Terminal 2 has an area of over 255,000 sq. meters and is able to handle around 25 million passengers each year.
But the rising population, strong demand, and new routes make it difficult for airport to handle the flow of passengers. To tackle this, the Terminal will be expanded further with 200,000 sq meters of area. This expansion will help the airport handle 20 million more passengers annually.
Well, this may not be sufficient as airlines like Air India (AI) is planning to make BLR as its southern hub and will launch new international flights to North America, Europe, far east Asia and Australia. So to manage the high demand in future, the airport will construct Terminal 3.
Combinedly all these terminals will handle 90 to 100 million passengers annually by early 2030s.
Cargo Capacity
Apart from passengers, the airport is continuously expanding its cargo revenues and facilities by investing and partnering with renowned operators.
The airport is handling more international cargo than domestic. It handled around 266K metric tonnes of Int’l cargo and 174K of domestic consignments. Well by 2030, the airport will be able to handle one million metric tonnes of cargo.
The Airport is developing a new domestic cargo terminal to help the country grow rapidly. India is now the third largest domestic market in the world and will continue to expand as it is the most populated country on the planet.
Overall, with strategic investment, strong vision, and solid commitment, the Bengaluru airport is set to grow in both passenger and cargo segments.
