CHICAGO- Today, United Airlines (UA) unveiled plans to install upgraded, more spacious overhead bins on its Skywest-operated Embraer E175 fleet, aimed at providing passengers with additional storage capacity for their carry-on luggage.
By the year’s end, these enhanced bins will be implemented across 50 aircraft featuring a 76-seat configuration. United anticipates extending this feature to over 150 aircraft by 2026.
United E175 Overhead Bin
United’s initiative marks the debut of larger overhead bins on E175 aircraft in the airline industry, with projections suggesting that this upgrade will significantly reduce the necessity for gate-checking bags on over 150,000 E175 flights annually, benefiting approximately one million passengers.
By introducing these expanded overhead bins, United seeks to enhance the passenger journey aboard its Embraer E175 fleet, prioritizing customer convenience and operational efficiency.
These updated bins are expected to accommodate nearly 29 additional carry-on bags per regional jet, translating to an impressive 80% increase in storage capacity.
Executive Remarks
Linda Jojo, United’s chief customer officer, expressed, “Customer feedback regarding the new overhead bins and distinctive interiors has been overwhelmingly positive. With the reduction in gate-checked bags, we’ve observed a notable improvement in gate and boarding satisfaction. This represents our ongoing commitment to delivering an exceptional travel experience, whether our customers embark on international journeys or regional flights.”
Presently, United has over 200 mainline aircraft equipped with spacious bins capable of accommodating all passengers’ carry-on luggage, and the airline is actively retrofitting its domestic narrowbody fleet accordingly.
Introducing enhanced overhead bins in the regional fleet aims to ensure a seamless connecting experience for travelers. Additionally, each E175 aircraft featuring these upgraded bins will include braille and tactile placards, enhancing accessibility—a component of a broader initiative announced by the airline in 2023.
United Airlines and United Express collectively operate an average of more than 4,000 flights daily, serving over 350 airports across six continents.
SkyWest is the world’s largest E175 operator, facilitating over 700 daily departures to more than 140 destinations under the United Express banner. In 2023, United became the world’s largest carrier by seat miles, accommodating more than 150 million passengers.
