GURUGRAM- Sources have disclosed that in recent weeks, Tata Group-owned Air India (AI) has terminated employment for more than 180 non-flying employees. Because these individuals couldn’t avail themselves of voluntary retirement schemes and reskilling opportunities.
An Air India spokesperson explained that non-flying employees were assigned roles based on organizational needs and individual qualifications during the fitment process.
Air India Terminates 180 Employees
AI Spokeperson noted a comprehensive evaluation of all employees over the past 18 months. Further, they provided Voluntary Retirement Schemes and reskilling opportunities to all of them.
Additionally, the spokesperson mentioned that less than 1 percent of the employee base, unable to utilize these opportunities, had to be separated, with all contractual obligations being honored.
While the airline didn’t specify the exact number of staff layoffs, sources indicated it to be slightly over 180 legacy employees.
Voluntary Retirement Schemes
Air India’s total workforce is approximately 18,000 employees. Since the Tata Group takeover, two rounds of Voluntary Retirement Schemes have been implemented.
According to the spokesperson, a crucial aspect of the multi-year transformational initiative Vihaan.AI is establishing an agile and efficient organizational structure aligned with the business model, fostering expansion and ambition.
Air India is embarking on a significant five-year transformation journey led by Vihaan. AI. It aims to evolve into a world-class airline with an authentic Indian identity.
The initial phase of this transformation, known as the “taxi phase,” has recently been completed, focusing on rectifying fundamental aspects. This phase involved reintroducing several long-grounded aircraft into service, recruiting talent across various flying and ground roles, rapid technological advancements, and enhancing customer service initiatives, among other endeavors.
