Its primary hub lies at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi, complemented by a secondary hub at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai (BOM).
Air India Aircraft Fleet
As of March 2024, Air India Group ranks as the second-largest airline in India by passenger volume, trailing behind IndiGo (6E). Notably, it joined the esteemed Star Alliance as its 27th member on July 11, 2014.
Air India, operating with the IATA code AI and ICAO code AIC, is identified by the callsign AIRINDIA as India’s national carrier. Established in 1932, it functions as a subsidiary of the Tata Group, incorporating entities such as AI Fleet Services, AIX Connect (comprising 24 aircraft), Air India Express (featuring 47 aircraft), and Air India Regional.
The airline’s primary hub is situated at Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport (BOM), with supplementary bases at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL).

Expansion of Air India
Air India has bolstered its fleet in the last couple of years by leasing 36 aircraft while advancing its substantial order of 470 aircraft with Airbus and Boeing. Additionally, the airline has expanded its network by introducing five domestic and 11 international routes and establishing five new international stations. Furthermore, new brand identities for both Air India and Air India Express were unveiled last year.
Since Air India returned to the Tata Group on January 27, 2022, the new owners have prioritized enhancing the airline’s product offerings and devising plans for significant expansion.
A comprehensive five-year roadmap, named Vihaan.AI, has been developed with the aim of substantially expanding the airline’s network and fleet to achieve sustained growth, profitability, and market leadership
Air India’s Strategic Partnerships
The Tata Group is currently consolidating its aviation operations by merging Air India and Vistara to form a single full-service carrier operating under the Air India brand.
Air India Express and AIX Connect (previously AirAsia India) are also being merged to establish a unified budget airline operating under the Air India Express brand.
While the operational integration of Air India Express and AIX Connect has been finalized, the merger of Air India and Vistara is anticipated to occur sometime in 2025.
New Update
Air India is set to commence operational flights utilizing its third Airbus A350, bearing registration VT-JRE, for familiarization purposes starting from April 1st.
The airline will offer daily flights connecting Delhi and Mumbai with the following schedule:
- Flight AI864: Departing from Mumbai at 07:00 and arriving in Delhi at 09:15.
- Flight AI865: Departing from Delhi at 10:45 and arriving in Mumbai at 12:50.
Beginning April 10th, this aircraft will facilitate double daily flights along the same route:
- Flight AI687 departed from Mumbai at 16:00 and arrived in Delhi at 18:30.
- Flight AI805: Departing from Delhi at 20:00 and arriving in Mumbai at 22:25.
