TORONTO- On Jan 8, 2024, a passenger on an Air Canada (AC) flight sustained injuries after opening the door of a Boeing 777, which was still at a boarding gate at Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ), and subsequently falling, the airline reported.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Air Canada disclosed that the incident occurred on Monday during the boarding process of a flight from Toronto to Dubai (DXB).

“While the aircraft was stationed at the gate, a passenger, who had initially boarded the aircraft as per usual, opened a cabin door on the opposite side of the aircraft instead of proceeding to their seat,” stated the air carrier.
The passenger suffered injuries upon falling to the tarmac.
Emergency services and authorities responded to the situation. In a statement provided to CBC News on Wednesday, a spokesperson for Peel police indicated that the individual was “in a state of crisis” during the incident and experienced “relatively minor injuries” upon falling onto the tarmac.
The statement mentioned, “He was subsequently apprehended by police and transported to a local hospital to receive the necessary treatment.”
Air Canada noted that the flight, a Boeing 777 with a capacity of 319 people, encountered a delay and departed later.
The airline assured that it adhered to all approved boarding and cabin operating procedures and it is actively reviewing the incident.

This unfortunate incident has shed light on personal safety while working near the aircraft. This is not the first time such an incident has happened, and it’s important for personnel to follow safety precautions. Subsequently, the management should promote a safe work culture.
The All India Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Union (AIAMEU) has shared more information about this unfortunate incident.

With a deep sense of grief, we regret to inform you that one of our team members, Mr R P Singh (Sr supdt ser eng, Delhi Base), left us for a heavenly abode as he fell down from a trestle while changing radome on the aircraft, today 2’clock night. Let Almighty bestow the strength to all his near and dear to bear with sudden tragic loss. Let’s all have him in our thoughts so that his soul rests in peace.

According to our source, Mr R P Singh was a permanent staff of AIESL and is likely to receive monetary compensation from AIESL, the Insurance company, and the Union. However, the exact value of this is yet to be determined.
