UNITED STATES- A recent data analysis conducted by travel specialists at Upgraded Points offers travelers a comprehensive perspective on the fluctuations in prices for first-class tickets among four prominent U.S. airlines and twelve of the most frequented domestic flight routes.
The research involved an examination of Google Flights data, focusing on the one-way ticket prices for both economy and first class seats offered by Alaska Airlines (AS), American Airlines (AA), Delta Air Lines (DL), and United Airlines (UA).

“Although some might perceive flying in first-class as a financial commitment, the undeniable advantages such as added legroom, preflight amenities, and complimentary drinks often make it an enticing option,” remarked Alex Miller, the founder of Upgraded Points.
He added, “Considering the modest average premium of $262.97 per one-way flight, this level of luxury might be within more travelers’ financial reach than they realize.”
The research compiled ticket price information from Google Flights, concentrating on the 12 most heavily traveled domestic flight routes within the United States.
Across each of these routes, the study documented details about the most budget-friendly one-way tickets available for both economy and first-class accommodations from four U.S. airlines over a span of seven days.
The data encompassed peak and non-peak departure dates to view pricing patterns comprehensively. Subsequently, the collected costs were averaged to establish the one-way ticket prices for both economy and first-class seating.
The study intentionally excluded U.S. airlines that lacked first-class offerings or had insufficient data related to the examined routes.
Key Insights from the Study
Delta Air Lines leads the field by offering the steepest premiums, charging an extra $284.55 for a one-way, first-class ticket compared to economy class.
Alaska Airlines features substantial differences in first-class ticket pricing among the airlines surveyed, with a margin of $281.25. This is compensated by the airline’s distinctive offerings, such as providing food on flights as short as 550 miles.
Travelers flying with United Airlines can elevate their experience to first class without straining their budget, as the price variance between economy and first class is approximately $250.23.
Among the airlines examined, American Airlines emerges as the most budget-friendly option, displaying a notably smaller divergence between first-class and economy ticket prices ($235.85).
Alex Miller, Founder of Upgraded Points, elaborated on the findings, stating,
“Based on our data, American Airlines emerges as the most economically advantageous choice for travelers seeking an upgraded flight experience. In addition to the standard perks of first-class, American Airlines passengers might also have the opportunity to enjoy the enhanced ambiance of a modern and cozy Admirals Club lounge, as the airline initiated upgrades to select airport lounges in 2022.”
