During a flight from Delhi to Sydney, Tata Air India (AI) flight AI302 operating Boeing 787, experienced significant turbulence, resulting in injuries to multiple passengers on Tuesday (May 16th 2023).
According to the source, the aircraft involved in the incident is Boeing 787 Dreamliner having registration VT-ANY. The aircraft is frequently deployed on the Asia Pacific (APAC) routes.
Air India Delhi Sydney Boeing 787 Turbulence Incident
The Air India flight AI-302 (Delhi-Sydney), operated by the B787-800 aircraft with registration VT-ANY, experienced severe turbulence. Seven passengers onboard reported minor sprains during the flight.
The cabin crew, supported by a doctor and a nurse onboard, promptly provided first aid to the affected passengers.
Upon arrival in Sydney, the airport manager of Air India made arrangements for medical assistance, but only three passengers opted to avail of it. Fortunately, no passengers required hospitalization.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is currently conducting an investigation into the incident. Further, Air India is yet to comment on the incident.
Flight Details
According to Flight Radar 24, Air India flight AI302 took off from Delhi Airport (DEL) at 2:42 AM with approx 22 minutes delay. After being airborne for 11 hours and 33 minutes and covering a distance of 10,422 KM landed safely.
Subsequently, the plane faced severe turbulence before landing at Sydney Airport (SYD) at 6:48 AM in the morning (All times are in IST). Further, the plane involved is VT-ANY which Air India took back in 2017, almost 6 years ago.
The reason for the turbulence is unknown, and more details are pending.

On August 24, 2022, an emergency landing was conducted in Kolkata airport when a 50-year-old passenger reported feeling out of breath, according to Kolkata airport officials.
Air India flight from Sydney headed for Delhi. Before departing for Delhi, the flight with 159 passengers on board stayed at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport for 2 hours from 4:50 PM to 6:50 PM. The passenger was admitted to a hospital in Kolkata.
