He had aspired to fly commercial jets after completing his training. But his ambitions were dashed when the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) rejected him a medical certificate pronouncing him temporarily competent to fly due to hormone therapy.
Adam Harry, a 23-year-old pilot, is now compelled to work as a food delivery agent for Zomato. Harry shot to fame in 2019 after becoming India’s first trans trainee pilot.
As long as he is on hormone medication, the DGCA maintains he is unfit to fly. Adam Harry earned his private pilot licence (PPL) in South Africa and will begin studying for a commercial pilot licence in January 2020 at the Rajiv Gandhi Academy for Aviation Technology in Thiruvananthapuram.
The Kerala government's social welfare department assisted Adam Harry in gaining admission to a flying institute to pursue a career in aviation.
Harry was assigned a female gender at birth. However, Harry identified himself as a trans man to officials by growing a beard and spoke in a masculine voice.
He had to pass medical examinations in order to get his student pilot licence. However, Harry was forced to submit his application form as a female because the DGCA’s medical examination form did not include a transsexual option.
The DGCA declared Adam Harry ‘temporarily‘ incompetent after comprehensive testing, citing gender dysphoria (unease that a person may have because of a mismatch between biological sex and their gender identity). Harry is undergoing “cross sex hormone therapy.”
Officials have now recommended Harry to complete his hormone therapy before reapplying for the medical test.
Meanwhile, Harry stated that he was asked uncomfortable personal inquiries bordering on transphobia. He stated that he was asked about his physical appearance and how he would marry someone.
