There are plenty of prospects with the flight launch. PLAY, a low-cost airline working flights between the United States and Europe, welcomed international passengers Thursday and celebrated its inaugural flight to Iceland from New York Stewart International Airport in New Windsor.
PLAY is the sole international airline to serve New York Stewart
First and foremost, PLAY is the sole international airline to serve New York Stewart. Therefore, there is now an effective option to fly out of New York State to Europe rather than running to the busy sites of Newark and JFK. Moreover, local counties such as Orange County and Dutchess County could take advantage and attract several tourists en route to Ne
It’s also noteworthy that the cost of operating at New York Stewart Airport is much lower than at other international airports in the region. So, PLAY can offer low fares between the United States and Europe due to factors such as less traffic on the ground.
PLAY highlights that the processing and travel time to Manhattan would be around the same as the travel from the busy sites of Newark and JFK. In practice, New York Stewart is almost a 75-minute drive from Times Square.

Jonsson shared the following about the inauguration:
“The first flight went well, and this momentum will continue as we are seeing really strong bookings. For example, yesterday the rescue flight from Stewart had a load factor of almost 80%. These passengers are flying to Iceland and connecting to Europe. So, the business model is working, and we are confident about it.”
Europeans looking to try out PLAY
There are other benefits to working flights at SWF. While there will naturally be Europeans looking to try out PLAY as an alternative route across the pond, it’s traffic heading eastbound that is the prime audience. Overall, SWF’s location in Orange County, New York makes it a great place to cater to the local population.
Jonsson added:
“We can see from experience, especially when you work at an airport like these where there is no competition, there is no direct European connection to Europe from this catchment area. The market is primarily US-origin passengers.”
It’s not only the Hudson Valley population that is looking to head across the Atlantic with PLAY. Ground staff at New York Stewart noted that they were seeing passengers from all across the East Coast make their way to the airport with other airlines before flying to Iceland.
The company flew 56,601 passengers in May
All in all, it’s full steam ahead for PLAY. This addition permits the carrier to build on its growing passenger loads. The company flew 56,601 passengers in May, which is a 54% increase from April when it carried 36,669 passengers. Additionally, this number represents the same number of passengers PLAY carried during the whole of Q1 2022.
This month marks a year since PLAY launched operations out of Keflavik, making it a perfect time to achieve another milestone. With the recentm progress, backed by inaugurations such as New York Stewart Boston Logan, and Baltimore/Washington, Jonsson anticipates that his airline will serve as many passengers in June as it did for the whole of last year.
