What are critics and reviews saying about it?
“‘Top Gun: Maverick‘ satisfies with one foot in the past, hitting all the touchstones of the previous film but still standing on its own,” Kennedy wrote.
It soars by using the second to respond and repeat faults with the first, rather than being weighted down by its past like the last ‘Ghostbusters’ sequel.
“A lot of thought and deliberation have certainly gone into this long-awaited blockbuster sequel,” observed Justin Chang of the Los Angeles Times.
“The plain fact is that ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ works,” writes Anthony Lane of the New Yorker. It outflies the original while keeping one old-fashioned virtue: the soaring action unfolds against genuine skies, not gigantic smears of C.G.I.”
“Everything that worked in Tony Scott’s original film is harnessed and turned up in ‘Maverick,'” Kendrick wrote.
“The result is a picture that honours the ‘Top Gun legacy’ while simultaneously ripping open the series mythology by introducing new protagonists and using modern blockbuster effects to offer an emotionally complex and pulse-pounding trip.”
‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ which arrives 26 years after the first picture, is a rare sequel that is not only better than the original but also retrospectively deepens the tale of ‘Top Gun.'”
