Emirates, a Dubai-based airline, will resume pre-pandemic flight frequencies to India on April 1, operating 170 weekly flights to nine cities across the country.
In the run-up to the return of international scheduled operations, foreign airlines have started resuming service to India and expanding routes.
Emirates announced on Friday that it will operate 35 weekly flights from Mumbai, 28 weekly flights from Delhi, 24 weekly flights from Bengaluru, 21 weekly flights each from Chennai and Hyderabad, 14 weekly flights from Kochi, 11 weekly flights from Kolkata, nine weekly flights from Ahmedabad, and seven weekly flights from Thiruvananthapuram.
In addition, Virgin Atlantic, based in the United Kingdom, has announced the launch of a new second daily service from London to Delhi, beginning June 1.
The airline already has one daily trip between Delhi and London and another between Mumbai and London.
“This will be our largest-ever flight programme to India, our third-largest market internationally,” said Alex McEwan, Virgin Atlantic’s Country Manager for South Asia.
During the summer of 2022, Thai Airways plans to operate 35 flights per week between India and Thailand.
“As India resumes international flying, we look forward to expanding our presence in the country as we deepen our partnership with IndiGo and plan to launch new service between Seattle and Bangalore later this year,” Rhett Workman, MD–Europe, Middle East, and Asia operations at American Airlines, said in a statement.
It runs a nonstop service between Delhi and New York.
Other European airlines, such as Air France, KLM, Finnair, Lufthansa, LOT Polish, and Malaysia Airlines, have announced new routes, increased frequencies, and resumed previous flights to India.
Because regular foreign flights have been banned since 2020, the air bubble agreements have enabled overseas air connectivity.
Carriers will be able to operate capacity in accordance with the original air service agreements struck between India and their home nation once regular flights resume.
