NEW YORK— An American Airlines (AA) transatlantic flight bound for Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) was forced to return to New York John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) mid-route on June 2025.
Flight AAL44, operated by a Boeing 777-223(ER), departed JFK but later turned back over the Atlantic Ocean. The diversion was reportedly due to a malfunction in one of the aircraft’s air-conditioning packs.
American Flight Returns to New York
American Airlines flight AAL44, a scheduled service from New York (JFK) to Paris (CDG), departed on 30 June 2025. Operated by a Boeing 777-223(ER), registration N766AN, the aircraft was approximately three hours into its journey when it initiated a U-turn off the coast of Nova Scotia.
The aircraft was cruising at around 37,000 feet with a ground speed of 510 knots when the decision to divert was made.
Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 clearly shows the diversion path back toward JFK, where the aircraft eventually landed.
According to the operational remarks, the aircraft experienced a right air-conditioning pack failure. Such systems are critical for maintaining cabin pressure and temperature, especially on long-haul routes, prompting the immediate return as a precautionary measure.
Initial documentation from the flight dispatch logs indicates that AAL44 was already impacted by multiple delays before departure. The original estimated departure time was 5:30 PM (local), but actual pushback occurred at 5:25 PM with takeoff at 6:23 PM.
Subsequent entries reveal a delayed Estimated Time of Departure (ETD) update at 11:39 PM, due to a “previous delay of this aircraft”, and an estimated time of arrival at CDG updated to 10:53 PM local Paris time. However, the final return to JFK was timestamped at approximately 9:06 PM.

Post-landing, the aircraft underwent a detailed inspection. According to the Canadian Transportation Safety Board (TSB), maintenance teams found a broken fuel tube in the affected engine. The faulty component was replaced, and the aircraft was cleared for return to service.
