United Airlines (UA) Boeing 777-200 operating flight UA926 from San Francisco (SFO) to Frankfurt (FRA) returned to its departure airport on July 9, 2026, after the crew shut down the right hand engine in flight.
United Boeing 777 Engine Failure
United Airlines (UA) is placing multiple Pratt & Whitney-powered Boeing 777 aircraft into long-term storage as engine reliability issues and parts shortages disrupt operations.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has attributed partial blame for the uncontained failure of the Pratt and Whitney PW4077 turbofan engine in 2021 to deficiencies in engine design and testing, as well as insufficient fan blade inspections.
