Emirates A350-900 Turns Back After Engine Fault
Passengers endured a mid-air disruption on flight EK441. The Airbus A350-900, registered A6-EXQ, departed Adelaide at about 10:35 pm on Monday, October 12, 2026. The crew detected a technical fault while the aircraft was flying northwest toward Dubai.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) confirmed to 7NEWS that the pilots carried out a precautionary shutdown of the left engine, also known as Engine 1. The aircraft uses Trent XWB engines.
Passengers said the crew told them about an engine problem while the aircraft was in the air. They were also told the plane would return to Adelaide.
An early report said an engine fire was reported near the Western Australia and South Australia border. The Aviation Herald did not mention a fire. It reported that passengers saw sparks from one of the engines.
The reports also differ on where the aircraft turned back. One report placed the issue near the state border. The Aviation Herald placed the turnaround about 620 nautical miles northwest of Adelaide. Emirates has described the event only as a technical fault.
Flight Path and Timeline
One report said the flight abandoned its journey roughly two hours after departure. According to The Aviation Herald, the aircraft was cruising at FL320 about 320 nautical miles northwest of Adelaide when the crew descended. The crew first continued toward Dubai.
About 620 nautical miles northwest of Adelaide, the aircraft turned around and levelled off at FL220. It then flew back to Adelaide and landed on runway 23 about 3 hours and 15 minutes after departure.
Emergency Response at Adelaide Airport
Airport firefighters waited on the tarmac as a precaution. An Adelaide Airport spokesperson told the ABC that emergency crews were on standby when the aircraft touched down shortly after 2 am on Tuesday.
The aircraft landed without further incident. Passengers and crew disembarked safely.

Statement From Emirates

The airline apologised for the inconvenience. It said the safety of passengers and crew is of utmost importance and will not be compromised.
Passengers were either sent home or provided with hotel accommodation while alternative travel arrangements were made. Emirates said flight EK441 is scheduled to depart again for Dubai at 10:35 pm local Adelaide time on Tuesday. That is almost 24 hours after the original departure.
The airline said it will accommodate passengers with onward connections.

Aircraft Status After the Incident
The Aviation Herald reported that A6-EXQ remained on the ground about 28 hours after landing. The ATSB confirmed the precautionary shutdown of Engine 1.
