TOKYO— Finnair (AY) will increase its presence in Japan next summer, adding more flights between Helsinki Airport (HEL) and Tokyo as the airline responds to continued demand for travel between Europe and Asia.
The Finnish carrier will increase frequencies on its Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) service while maintaining its daily operation to Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND).
The expansion will give Finnair up to three daily flights between Helsinki and Tokyo during peak periods of the summer 2027 season.
The additional capacity will provide passengers with more departure options while supporting connections between Japan and Finnair’s wider European network through Helsinki.
Finnair Adds More Tokyo Flights Next Summer
Finnair will add frequencies to its Tokyo Narita route during the peak summer travel period, taking the service to as many as two daily flights.
The airline will operate the additional Narita services alongside its existing daily connection to Tokyo Haneda.
The increased Narita schedule will create a record number of Helsinki-Tokyo connections for Finnair.
By combining the Narita and Haneda services, the airline will offer up to three daily flights to Tokyo when demand is at its highest.
The schedule has been designed to support onward connections through Helsinki, allowing passengers arriving from Japan to continue their journeys to destinations across Europe. This network structure remains an important part of Finnair’s long-haul strategy.
Japan Capacity Reaches Record Levels Next Summer
Finnair’s overall Japan schedule will grow from 28 weekly flights in summer 2026 to as many as 32 weekly flights in summer 2027. The increase represents four additional weekly services across the airline’s Japan network.
Christine Rovelli, Finnair’s Chief Revenue Officer, said Japan remains the airline’s largest market outside Finland and that demand for Japanese travel has continued to be strong.
She added that the additional Narita frequencies will give passengers greater choice and more convenient connections to Tokyo.
The airline has gradually expanded its Japan capacity in recent years as it develops its Asian network.
Tokyo remains its most frequently served Japanese destination, with both Narita and Haneda providing access to the wider Tokyo metropolitan area.
Wider Japan Network Expansion Plans
Finnair currently operates year-round services to Tokyo Haneda, Tokyo Narita and Osaka.
During the summer season, the airline also serves Nagoya, maintaining its position as the only European airline operating flights to the Japanese city.
The carrier’s Japan network gives passengers several entry points into the country while connecting Japanese destinations with Finnair’s European network through Helsinki.
The additional Tokyo flights will further increase capacity on one of the airline’s key Asian markets.
For summer 2027, the higher frequency between Helsinki and Tokyo will give travelers more flexibility when planning trips between Japan and Europe.
