LONDON- British Airways (BA) will return to Dubai International Airport (DXB) with one daily flight from November 3, before increasing to two daily services in summer 2027. Emirates (EK) and Etihad Airways (EY) could benefit from the reduced British Airways capacity.
The airline previously operated 28 weekly round trips to the UAE, including three daily flights to Dubai and one daily flight to Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH). Abu Dhabi will remain outside the British Airways schedule until the winter 2027-28 season.
British Airways Scales Back Its UAE Network
British Airways is taking a more limited approach to its UAE schedule after operating a much larger network between the UK and the region.
From November 3, the airline plans to operate a single daily service to Dubai. The carrier intends to increase that frequency to two flights per day in summer 2027.
The revised schedule is substantially smaller than the operation British Airways had before the US-Iran conflict began in February. At that time, the airline operated 28 weekly round trips to the UAE, consisting of three daily services to Dubai and one daily service to Abu Dhabi.
The new plan therefore represents a reduction in both overall frequency and network coverage. Dubai will retain a British Airways service, while Abu Dhabi has no planned British Airways operation until the winter 2027-28 season.
Conflict Concerns Prompt Airline Capacity Cuts
The schedule changes come as European airlines remain concerned about the financial risks associated with operating during periods of conflict and uncertainty.
John Grant, a partner at Midas Aviation and an AGBI columnist, said the British Airways decision would “play” to Emirates and Etihad Airways but would not be of major significance to British Airways.
Grant said European airlines can lose substantial amounts of money in such situations, particularly during the winter period, and described the decision as a move to “cut their losses.”
His comments provide the main explanation for the reduced British Airways capacity. The airline is limiting its exposure rather than immediately restoring the schedule it operated before the February disruption.
Dubai Returns Before Abu Dhabi
British Airways is taking different approaches to its two UAE destinations.
Dubai will regain a daily British Airways service on November 3, with the airline planning to increase the operation to two daily flights from summer 2027.
Abu Dhabi faces a longer gap. British Airways has stated that there is no place for Abu Dhabi in its scheduling until the winter 2027-28 season.
The difference means Dubai will retain a British Airways connection during the initial recovery period, while Abu Dhabi will remain without the carrier for a substantially longer period.
Emirates Reports Strong UK Booking Demand
The reduced British Airways schedule comes as Emirates reports stronger demand from the UK.
Earlier this week, Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ deputy president and chief commercial officer, told AGBI that bookings from the UK for the upcoming October midterm break had increased by 10 percent year on year.
Kazim said Emirates was already well equipped and well served in the UK market in terms of capacity. He also said the airline could bring in additional capacity when required.
The comments indicate that Emirates has capacity flexibility at a time when British Airways is reducing its UAE operation. The two carriers serve the same broad UK-UAE market, making changes in available seats relevant to the competitive balance between them.
Emirates and Etihad Could Benefit From Reduced BA Capacity
Grant specifically identified Emirates and Etihad as the UAE airlines positioned to benefit from the British Airways cuts.
For Emirates, the opportunity is particularly relevant in the Dubai market, where British Airways will initially operate only one daily service instead of the three daily flights it previously operated.
For Etihad, the British Airways decision affects Abu Dhabi more directly because the British carrier does not plan to resume service to the capital until the winter 2027-28 season.
The impact should be considered in the context of the wider airline market rather than as a change involving British Airways alone. Other international airlines have also suspended or reduced services to Dubai and other destinations in the region.
Other Airlines Also Suspend UAE Services
British Airways is one of several international carriers that are still not flying to the UAE or have suspended relevant services.
Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific has suspended flights to Dubai until December 1.
Netherlands-based KLM will not fly to Dubai, Riyadh or Dammam until October 25.
Lufthansa, Eurowings and SWISS have also suspended flights to and from Dubai until October 25.
These separate schedule decisions mean that the reduction in international airline capacity extends beyond British Airways. The combined changes affect the availability of flights to major Gulf markets during the period covered by the suspensions.
What the UK-UAE Schedule Changes Mean
The latest British Airways plan leaves the airline with a smaller UAE presence than it operated before the February conflict.
Dubai will continue to receive British Airways flights, but the initial frequency will be one service per day. The planned increase to two daily flights in summer 2027 remains below the three daily Dubai services that were previously operated.
Abu Dhabi will experience a longer interruption, with British Airways not scheduled to return until winter 2027-28.
At the same time, Emirates has reported a 10 percent year-on-year increase in UK bookings for the October midterm break and has indicated that it can add capacity when necessary. Etihad also stands to benefit from the absence of British Airways service in Abu Dhabi during the affected period.
The changes point to a broader adjustment in airline capacity across the UAE as carriers respond to operating risks, seasonal conditions and changing schedules.
