American Express cardholders with eligible Priority Pass benefits have gained another way to enter participating airport lounges.
Instead of relying only on a physical Priority Pass membership card or the digital membership card stored in the Priority Pass app, some members can now use their eligible American Express payment card for verification.
The change could make airport lounge access more convenient for travelers during long connections, flight delays and busy travel days.
It does not expand the number of lounges available to cardholders or create a new lounge benefit; rather, it provides an additional method of proving an existing Priority Pass membership.
Amex Card Lounge Access
Priority Pass has introduced payment-card access as one of the methods eligible members can use when entering participating lounges.
The program says members who receive Priority Pass through a qualifying payment card can use the same bank-issued card associated with their membership, although acceptance depends on the individual lounge.
For American Express customers, the development is particularly relevant because several premium cards include Priority Pass membership as part of their travel benefits.
The Platinum Card from American Express, Business Platinum Card from American Express, and Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card are among the U.S. products associated with the benefit, although eligibility and terms vary by card.
American Express has also updated the terms for its U.S. Platinum Card. The current terms state that enrolled Platinum Card Members may be able to enter select Priority Pass lounges by presenting a valid physical Platinum Card together with an airline boarding pass.
However, cardholders cannot simply take any American Express card to an airport lounge and expect entry.
The traveler must have an eligible card-linked Priority Pass membership, complete the required enrollment, and use a lounge that accepts payment cards as an entry method.
This distinction is important because American Express offers numerous cards with different travel benefits.
Simply holding an Amex card does not automatically provide Priority Pass membership or payment-card lounge access.
Priority Pass Rules
Priority Pass continues to support its traditional entry methods. Members can generally use a physical Priority Pass membership card or a Digital Membership Card through the Priority Pass app, while payment-card entry provides an additional option for qualifying memberships.
The program recommends checking the individual lounge listing before traveling because not every participating location accepts payment cards.
Lounge operating hours, access conditions, guest policies, and capacity restrictions can also differ between airports.
A same-day airline boarding pass remains an important part of the entry process. American Express states that eligible Platinum Card Members using the physical Platinum Card at participating Priority Pass locations must present the card along with their airline boarding pass.
The change also does not eliminate the need to enroll in Priority Pass. American Express requires eligible cardholders to enroll before receiving the Priority Pass benefit, and the membership must remain associated with a valid card account.
For travelers who have already enrolled, Priority Pass continues to provide digital membership credentials through its app.
The app can also help passengers identify lounges, review amenities, and confirm which forms of entry are accepted at a particular location.
Physical Priority Pass cards are not necessarily being replaced immediately. Existing members may continue using their physical membership cards according to the applicable terms, while the digital card remains another option for accessing lounges.
Priority Pass also warns that travelers using payment-card access may encounter problems if their card is not properly registered or recognized by the lounge’s system.
The program recommends keeping the membership information updated and carrying another accepted form of access when possible.
Guest policies remain separate from the new entry method. A cardholder’s ability to bring guests, and whether those guests receive complimentary access or incur a fee, depends on the specific American Express benefit and the lounge’s rules.
What Travelers Need
The biggest advantage of the change is convenience rather than additional benefits. A traveler who already carries an eligible American Express card can potentially leave the separate Priority Pass card behind and use the payment card at a participating lounge.
That could be useful when a phone has run out of battery or when accessing a digital membership card becomes difficult.
It also reduces the number of cards a frequent traveler may need to keep available during a journey.
There are still reasons to keep the Priority Pass app installed. The application can show participating lounges, operating hours, available facilities, and specific entry requirements, helping passengers determine whether their chosen lounge accepts payment-card access before arriving.
Travelers should also check the terms associated with their individual American Express card because benefits can change.
Priority Pass membership, complimentary visits, and guest privileges are determined by the card’s current benefit structure rather than by the payment-card access feature itself.
For eligible U.S. Platinum Card Members, American Express currently confirms that the physical Platinum Card may work as an entry credential at select Priority Pass lounges.
Business Platinum Card Members can similarly be eligible to use their physical card at select participating locations, subject to the applicable terms, Kiplinger flagged.

The development therefore represents a relatively small change with a practical benefit for frequent flyers.
Instead of creating another lounge network or increasing the number of included visits, American Express and Priority Pass are giving some travelers a simpler way to verify the access they already have.
Passengers should still check the Priority Pass lounge listing before departure, carry their same-day boarding pass, and keep the digital membership card available as a backup.
With those precautions, the physical Amex card can provide another convenient route into participating airport lounges.
