NEW YORK- A United Airlines (UA) passenger was arrested at Palm Beach International Airport (PBI), now officially named President Donald J. Trump International Airport, after a lengthy confrontation with airline staff, law enforcement officers, and airport personnel following extensive delays to her flight to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).
The incident occurred after severe weather disrupted thousands of flights across the United States, including United Airlines (UA) operations. Authorities said the passenger was denied boarding due to her behavior and later faced multiple criminal charges following her refusal to leave the airport.
Flight Delay Escalated Into Airport Confrontation
The incident unfolded on Monday, March 16, when widespread storms affected several major U.S. airline hubs. According to flight operations data, more than 12,500 flights were delayed or canceled nationwide as adverse weather created significant operational disruptions.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented air traffic control delay programs at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), one of United Airlines’ largest hubs. As a result, approximately 36% of United Airlines (UA) flights experienced delays or cancellations.
The passenger had been booked on United Airlines Flight 1395 from Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Although her boarding pass displayed a scheduled boarding time of 3:52 p.m., the flight experienced repeated delays throughout the day.
By the time she arrived at the airport at approximately 9:00 p.m., the flight had already been delayed by nearly six hours and 48 minutes. Airline representatives informed law enforcement that they were unable to rebook her on another flight for approximately two days because of limited seat availability following the widespread disruptions.
Disruptive Behavior Led to Denied Boarding
According to police reports and body camera footage that was later released publicly, the passenger became increasingly confrontational while speaking with United employees.
Officers stated that she shouted at airline staff, used profanity, and began taking photographs of deputies responding to the situation. Law enforcement informed her that recording officers was permitted but repeatedly warned that continued disruptive behavior could prevent her from traveling.
During the encounter, one deputy advised the passenger that she needed to calm down and appear sober before any further discussions about travel could continue.
Under Federal Aviation Administration regulations, airlines are prohibited from transporting passengers who appear intoxicated. Airlines also retain the authority to deny boarding to individuals whose behavior is abusive, threatening, or disruptive to employees, passengers, or flight operations, View from the Wing flagged.
Officers Offered Alternative Transportation
Instead of immediately arresting the passenger, deputies attempted several times to help her leave the airport voluntarily.
They offered to arrange an Uber, a taxi, or contact her son to pick her up. The passenger responded that she had no money for transportation and explained that her son was in Miami.
As officers escorted her toward the terminal exit, she continued filming the interaction while threatening legal action. She also stated that her brother was a prominent attorney in New Jersey, prompting one officer to suggest that her lawyer could also arrange transportation for her.
The passenger then demanded to speak with a representative from the airport authority, mistakenly referring to it as the “Department of Air Force.”
Airport personnel responded by issuing a formal trespass warning, informing her that she was prohibited from returning to the airport property for one year unless the restriction was lifted through the appropriate legal process.
Trespassing Arrest Followed Continued Refusal to Leave
Authorities said the passenger continued arguing after receiving the trespass warning.
She demanded supervisors, questioned officers about due process, and warned airport employees that they would lose their jobs. During the exchange, she also directed racial insults toward one of the deputies.
When officers informed her that the conversation had ended and instructed her to leave airport property, she refused.
Deputies then placed her under arrest for trespassing. According to arrest reports, she resisted being handcuffed, and one deputy alleged that she attempted to kick him during the arrest.
After complaining of wrist pain, Palm Beach Fire Rescue personnel examined her at the scene and determined that she did not require further medical treatment.
Charges Later Reduced Through Pretrial Agreement
Approximately one hour after her arrest, the passenger received a phone call from her daughter asking whether she had boarded the flight.
She replied that the flight had been canceled and stated that a nurse was attending to her. She did not mention that she had been arrested.
Before being transported to jail, she reportedly acknowledged her behavior by saying that being “mouthy” was simply part of her personality.
Authorities initially charged her with:
- Trespassing
- Resisting an officer without violence
- Resisting an officer with violence
Court records show that prosecutors later dismissed the felony resisting with violence charge.
The passenger subsequently entered a pretrial diversion agreement on the remaining misdemeanor charges, which required her to make a $250 donation to Palm Beach County Victim Services, allowing the case to be resolved without further prosecution under the agreement’s terms.
