BEIJING- China’s Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) successfully completed the maiden flight of the high-altitude variant of its C919 passenger aircraft on Wednesday (July 29, 2026), marking another key milestone in the expansion of the country’s indigenous commercial aircraft program.
The flight departed from and landed at Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), with the aircraft airborne for 1 hour and 59 minutes and completing all scheduled test objectives.
The successful flight advances the development of a specialized version of the C919 designed for operations at high-altitude airports, where thinner air creates greater performance challenges.
Based on the standard C919, the new aircraft incorporates structural and system upgrades that will enable airlines to operate more efficiently from plateau airports across western China and other elevated regions.

High-Altitude Variant of COMAC C919
According to COMAC, the new aircraft is derived from the standard C919 but features a shortened fuselage and upgraded onboard systems tailored for high-altitude operations.
These modifications are intended to improve aircraft performance at airports where reduced air density affects engine thrust and aerodynamic efficiency.
The maiden flight lasted one hour and 59 minutes, during which engineers evaluated the aircraft against all planned test items. COMAC confirmed that every scheduled objective was completed successfully, allowing the program to move into the next phase of flight testing and certification.
Unlike the baseline C919, which seats between 158 and 192 passengers, the high-altitude variant has been optimized specifically for routes serving elevated airports, CGTN flagged.
The specialized configuration is expected to support airlines operating in mountainous regions, particularly on the Tibetan Plateau, where airport elevations can exceed 3,000 meters.

C919 Development
The C919 represents China’s first domestically developed narrowbody passenger aircraft designed in accordance with internationally recognized airworthiness standards.
The aircraft also reflects China’s effort to establish an independent commercial aircraft manufacturing industry capable of competing with established global manufacturers.
The program has progressed steadily over the past decade. Final assembly of the first C919 was completed in November 2015 before the aircraft conducted its maiden flight in May 2017.
It later received its type certificate from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) in September 2022, clearing the way for commercial deliveries.
COMAC delivered the first production aircraft in December 2022, while the C919 entered commercial passenger service in May 2023. Since then, the aircraft has been introduced by several Chinese airlines, operating domestic routes across the country’s expanding aviation network.

Future Operations of the C919
The maiden flight of the high-altitude variant represents another important step in broadening the C919 family beyond the standard model.
As additional testing progresses, COMAC will continue validating the aircraft’s systems, handling characteristics, and operational performance before pursuing regulatory certification.
The specialized aircraft is expected to improve connectivity for airports located in challenging terrain, where aircraft performance requirements differ significantly from those at sea-level airports.
By developing a purpose-built high-altitude variant, COMAC aims to provide airlines with an aircraft better suited for these demanding operating environments.
