DARWIN— American, Australian, and Japanese Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II stealth fighters have begun flying joint combat missions over northern Australia as part of Exercise Pitch Black 2026, one of the world’s largest multinational air combat drills.
The biennial exercise is taking place from July 20 to August 7 across Darwin Airport (DRW), RAAF Base Tindal and Amberley Airport (ABX), bringing together more than 100 aircraft, 2,500 personnel and participants from 21 allied and partner nations.
The United States Air Force, the Royal Australian Air Force and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force are using the exercise to improve interoperability in realistic combat scenarios.
U.S. F-35As are operating from RAAF Base Tindal, while Japanese F-35As are flying from Darwin Airport (DRW). Australian F-35As are deployed from both locations, allowing the three operators of the fifth-generation fighter to train together in large-force missions.
F-35A Pitch Black Exercise Air Combat Training
Exercise Pitch Black has become Australia’s premier international air combat training event since its launch in 1983.
The 2026 edition focuses on high-end warfare scenarios that integrate fighter aircraft, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance platforms, aerial refueling assets, airlift aircraft and command-and-control systems into coordinated missions.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese officially opened the exercise in Darwin, emphasizing that regional security depends on strong international partnerships.
He said the drills reinforce Australia’s commitment to working closely with allied nations to promote peace, stability and security throughout the Indo-Pacific.
Exercise commander Air Commodore Matthew McCormack described the event as a warfighter-focused exercise designed to expose pilots and supporting personnel to demanding operational environments.
He noted that participants will fly increasingly complex missions that closely replicate the challenges of modern military operations while strengthening coalition cooperation.
Advanced Aircraft Combat Operations Overview
Although the joint F-35A operations have drawn significant attention, the exercise includes a broad mix of advanced military aircraft from participating nations.
Aircraft involved include F-16 Fighting Falcons, Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornets, Eurofighter Typhoons, tanker aircraft, transport platforms and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets, Stars and Stripes reported.
The U.S. Pacific Air Forces also deployed KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refueling aircraft and Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules transports after completing Exercise Southern Cross elsewhere in Australia.
Officials said the deployment demonstrates the ability of allied air forces to transition quickly between multinational operations while maintaining operational readiness.
Pacific Air Forces did not disclose the number of American aircraft or personnel taking part but stated that the exercise remains one of the largest and most sophisticated multinational air combat events conducted anywhere in the world.
Regional Cooperation Strengthens Allied Readiness
Military officials say the primary objective of Pitch Black is to improve interoperability among partner air forces before any real-world contingency arises.
By operating from multiple Australian bases and conducting integrated missions, participating nations refine common tactics, communication procedures and mission planning.
The exercise also follows the inaugural Exercise Southern Cross, allowing U.S. and Australian F-35A units to build on recent cooperation before expanding integration with Japan and other international partners.
This layered training approach enhances coalition readiness while reinforcing long-term defense relationships across the Indo-Pacific.
As geopolitical challenges continue to evolve in the region, Exercise Pitch Black highlights the growing emphasis on multinational cooperation and fifth-generation airpower.
With more than 100 aircraft flying over Australia’s vast training ranges, the exercise offers participating forces an opportunity to prepare for complex coalition operations in one of the world’s largest military airspaces.
