NASHVILLE— Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company (LMT), has introduced new Armed Black Hawk helicopter kits designed to expand the operational scope of the widely used UH-60 platform. The development enhances the aircraft’s ability to support multiple battlefield roles within a single airframe configuration.
The announcement was made during a defense industry event in Nashville, where the company highlighted the Black Hawk’s continued evolution as a multirole military platform. The new kits aim to strengthen mission flexibility while reducing the need for separate specialized aircraft fleets.
Black Hawk’s Multirole Expansion
The Armed Black Hawk kits extend the helicopter’s mission profile into a broader range of operational tasks. These include airmobile assault, close air support, medical evacuation, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), and tactical transport.
The system allows operators to use one aircraft platform for multiple mission types. This reduces logistical complexity and supports faster deployment decisions in dynamic operational environments.
Sikorsky emphasized that the upgraded configuration builds on the Black Hawk’s established battlefield reliability and long service history across global defense operations.
Modular Kit Design
The new system is built around modular, production-ready kits that can be installed based on mission requirements. Operators can select between two configured options, enabling either close support or precision strike capability.
The design supports rapid reconfiguration, allowing mission changes in approximately three hours. This flexibility enables forces to adapt aircraft roles without long maintenance delays or fleet restructuring.
The company also highlighted long-term value benefits, including reduced acquisition costs, lower training requirements, and improved lifecycle efficiency through a single-fleet model approach, as Sikorsky Vice President and General Manager Rich Benton said:

Operational Deployment of the Armed Black Hawk
The Armed Black Hawk kits will be available through Foreign Military Sales (FMS) and Direct Commercial Sales (DCS), allowing integration into allied defense fleets worldwide. Installation support will also be provided through Lockheed Martin-backed facilities, including PZL Mielec in Poland.
Sikorsky stated that the Black Hawk platform continues to evolve through engine upgrades, digital system integration, and autonomy enhancements. These improvements aim to improve operational safety and efficiency in high-demand environments.
The company also noted that the Black Hawk remains a core medium-lift platform with ongoing service life expected beyond 2070, reinforcing its long-term strategic importance in global defense aviation.
