CHICAGO— United Airlines (UA) has unveiled a new long-haul economy seating concept that transforms standard seats into a lie-flat couch, marking a major shift in passenger comfort strategy. The product, developed in collaboration with Air New Zealand (NZ), highlights growing innovation in economy cabins across global aviation.
The announcement also reinforces the long-standing partnership between United Airlines and Auckland-based Air New Zealand, which originally introduced the Skycouch concept in 2011. United will begin rolling out its version, branded as Relax Row, across widebody aircraft in the coming years.

United Airlines has confirmed that its Relax Row seating will debut in 2027, offering economy passengers a flexible, lie-flat-style experience. The design includes a row of three seats with adjustable leg rests that fold upward to create a flat surface for sleeping or relaxing.
The airline plans to install the product on more than 200 Boeing 777 and Boeing 787 aircraft by 2030. Each aircraft could feature up to 12 Relax Row sections positioned between standard economy and premium economy cabins.
Passengers booking these seats will receive added amenities such as a mattress pad, extra pillows, a blanket, and children-focused kits. The product targets families, couples, and solo travelers seeking enhanced comfort without upgrading to premium cabins.

United’s Air New Zealand Partnership
The concept behind Relax Row originates from Air New Zealand’s Skycouch, a pioneering economy seating innovation launched to address passenger comfort on long-haul flights. United has licensed this design, gaining exclusive rights to offer it within North America.
Both airlines collaborated closely to adapt the concept for United’s fleet and customer base, reported 1 News. The agreement represents one of the most significant endorsements of the Skycouch model since its introduction over a decade ago.
Air New Zealand has previously licensed similar designs to other international carriers, demonstrating the global appeal of flexible economy seating. However, United’s scale and market reach make this adoption particularly impactful.

Fleet Rollout Plans
United Airlines will progressively introduce Relax Row across its long-haul network, although specific routes have not yet been confirmed. The airline aims to standardize the offering across key international routes as part of its broader customer experience strategy.
The rollout aligns with United’s efforts to differentiate its economy product in a competitive market. By integrating comfort-focused features into standard cabins, the airline seeks to attract more value-conscious travelers.
