DELHI- India is evaluating a strategic move to join a European 6th-generation fighter jet program, signaling a long-term shift in its air combat roadmap.
The development follows inputs from the Ministry of Defence to a parliamentary panel, confirming that the Indian Air Force is studying global partnerships for next-generation combat systems.
New Delhi’s exploration comes as it continues to advance domestic projects while expanding international collaboration. Major aviation hubs like New Delhi and Bengaluru remain central to India’s aerospace ecosystem, even as global programs led by partner nations gain traction.
Europe’s 6th-Gen Fighter Jet Program
India is assessing two major European initiatives for potential collaboration. These include the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) led by the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan, and the Future Combat Air System spearheaded by France, Germany, and Spain.
Both programs aim to deliver operational sixth-generation fighter aircraft by the mid-2030s.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) intends to evaluate technological benefits, industrial participation, and long-term strategic value before making a decision.
Sixth-generation fighters represent a significant leap beyond current stealth aircraft. These platforms integrate advanced sensors, artificial intelligence, and network-centric warfare systems designed to operate in highly contested environments.
Strategic Tech Benefits
Joining such a program could provide India with early access to advanced technologies that are otherwise costly and time-intensive to develop independently.
These include adaptive engines, directed-energy weapons, and next-generation electronic warfare systems.
According to NDTV, the aircraft under development will function as part of a broader “system of systems.” This includes unmanned aerial vehicles, collaborative combat drones, and real-time data-sharing networks known as combat clouds.
India’s participation would also strengthen its domestic aerospace sector. It could enable technology transfer, boost local manufacturing, and accelerate innovation across defense research organizations and private industry.

India is simultaneously advancing its fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft program. However, officials have indicated that planning for sixth-generation capabilities is essential to remain competitive in future conflicts.
