TEHRAN— A US Air Force (USAF) Lockheed Martin F-35 stealth fighter conducted an emergency landing at a military base in the region following an in-flight incident during operations near Iranian airspace. The aircraft was deployed as part of ongoing US-led combat missions under Operation Epic Fury.
The mission reportedly originated from a forward operating location in the Middle East, with regional hubs such as Al Udeid Air Base supporting coalition air activity. Officials confirmed that the aircraft landed safely, while the pilot remained in stable condition after the incident.

US F-35 Emergency Landing
US Central Command confirmed that the stealth fighter encountered an unspecified emergency during an active combat sortie.
The aircraft successfully diverted to a secure location, demonstrating the platform’s survivability under operational stress.
While officials did not confirm the exact cause, multiple reports indicated the aircraft may have sustained damage from hostile fire. However, military authorities have not verified whether enemy engagement directly caused the emergency.
According to Flight Global, the pilot managed to maintain control throughout the incident. The safe landing highlights both pilot training and the aircraft’s advanced damage tolerance capabilities.

Combat Operations In and Around Iran
The incident occurred amid intensified US and allied air operations over Iran. These missions form part of Operation Epic Fury, a broader campaign aimed at establishing air superiority and limiting hostile threats in the region.
Stealth platforms such as the F-35 have played a central role in these operations. Their ability to operate in contested airspace allows deeper penetration into defended areas without early detection.
In addition to the F-35, the US has deployed a mix of assets, including B-2 bombers, F-15E strike fighters, and support aircraft. Naval aviation units operating from carriers in the region have also contributed to sustained air activity.
Military leadership has previously stated that southern Iranian airspace has become increasingly accessible for coalition aircraft. This shift reflects a combination of strategic suppression efforts and the use of advanced stealth systems.

Previous Aircraft Losses
The emergency landing marks a notable development in the ongoing campaign. It may represent the first instance of a US aircraft sustaining potential damage from hostile fire during Operation Epic Fury, although confirmation remains pending.
Earlier incidents included the loss of multiple US Air Force F-15E aircraft in a friendly fire event over Kuwait. In that case, all crew members safely ejected, preventing fatalities.
Separately, a KC-135 aerial refueling tanker crashed during operations over Iraq. The Pentagon reported that the crash resulted from an operational issue unrelated to combat, and all six crew members onboard were killed.
These events underline the operational risks faced by military aviation units in high-intensity environments. The latest F-35 incident further emphasizes the unpredictable nature of modern air combat, even for advanced stealth platforms.
