DENVER— A Denver International Airport (DEN) has approved a major expansion of Concourse C as passenger demand continues to surge across the Rocky Mountain region. The project reflects the airport’s long-term strategy to scale capacity while enhancing the traveler experience at one of the busiest hubs in the United States.
Denver Airport plans to construct 11 additional aircraft gates alongside new passenger amenities, including an outdoor patio offering uninterrupted views of the Rocky Mountains. The development comes as airlines such as United Airlines (UA) and Southwest Airlines (WN) seek more space to support sustained network growth.
Denver Airport Concourse C Expansion
The expansion, known as the C-West extension, will add approximately 400,000 square feet to the western end of Concourse C, reported The Points Guy.
The $700 million project will accommodate 11 new contact gates, expanded passenger circulation areas, and additional food and retail concessions.
A standout feature of the project is a new outdoor patio designed to provide panoramic mountain views.
Airport officials see the space as a premium amenity that enhances passenger comfort while reinforcing Denver’s geographic identity.
Denver City Council’s Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved the project management contract on December 17. This approval moves the project into its next development phase, although construction timelines have not yet been finalized.
Vision 100 Strategy
The C-West extension forms part of Denver International Airport’s Vision 100 program. The initiative aims to prepare the airport to handle up to 100 million passengers annually within the next decade.
DEN recorded a historic 82.4 million passengers in 2024, setting a new annual record.
Airport leadership views continued infrastructure investment as essential to managing future traffic without compromising operational efficiency.
The new gates follow a recently completed 39-gate expansion across DEN’s concourses. That earlier project primarily supported growth by Southwest and United, both of which operate major hubs at the airport.
Airline Gate Demand
Airport executives have confirmed strong airline interest in the new Concourse C gates. According to DEN leadership, a waiting list already exists as carriers look to increase flight frequencies and add new destinations.
Southwest, the primary occupant of Concourse C, is widely expected to seek access to the new gates.
Another possibility involves Delta Air Lines relocating operations, which could indirectly free capacity for United elsewhere at the airport.
United has publicly stated plans to expand its Denver hub to roughly 700 daily departures. With scheduled departures well below that target, the additional gates provide critical flexibility for future growth.
Beyond Concourse C, DEN continues multiple large-scale projects across the campus. These include the final phase of the main terminal renovation, set for completion in 2027, and design work on a new premium lounge facility.
