NEW YORK- China Airlines (CI) reached a milestone when an all-male cabin crew operated a long-haul flight from Taipei (TPE) to New York (JFK). The trip became possible after a rule change that removed gender limits on cabin crew assignments.
The crew members, all flight attendants for China Airlines, coordinated their bids to secure the same rotation to New York JFK to mark the first flight of its kind for the airline.

China Airlines All-Male Crew Flights
China Airlines historically placed restrictions on the number of male flight attendants allowed per flight, which meant most long-haul services carried only one or two men. This limited interaction among male crew members created an imbalance in work opportunities.
The flight attendant union negotiated for those limits to be removed. Once gender was no longer part of the assignment criteria, a group of senior male crew members saw an opportunity to demonstrate what the new system made possible.
They targeted a routine Taipei (TPE) to New York JFK rotation. It aligned with their schedules, offered a centrally located crew hotel, and provided a practical setting for their first coordinated trip.
Each participant agreed to step aside if a higher-seniority colleague, male or female, bid for the same duty period. This ensured fairness within the seniority system.
