CHRISTCHURCH- Air New Zealand (NZ) has launched a new seasonal service between Christchurch (CHC) and Adelaide (ADL). The inaugural flight took off on 27 October 2025, connecting New Zealand’s South Island directly with South Australia for the first time in years.
This twice-weekly route is designed to capture both leisure and visiting-friends-and-relatives (VFR) travel demand, offering around 15,000 seats over the summer season. The launch will strengthen NZ’s presence in the highly competitive Australia–New Zealand travel corridor.

Air New Zealand Christchurch to Adelaide Flights
The Christchurch–Adelaide flights operate on Mondays and Fridays from 27 October 2025 through 27 March 2026.
Air New Zealand is using its modern narrow-body Airbus A320 and A321neo aircraft for the service, ensuring passengers benefit from improved comfort and efficiency.
With approximately 15,000 seats available for the season, the route opens more convenient travel options for South Island residents heading to Australia and for Australian travelers eager to explore New Zealand’s South Island.

Strategic Implications for NZ
This new route meets a strong and previously underserved demand between Christchurch and Adelaide, as nearly 50,000 people already travel between the two regions annually via indirect connections.
By offering a nonstop option, Air New Zealand aims to capture a larger share of this traffic while supporting tourism and trade between the two cities.
For the airline, the route supports its wider trans-Tasman strategy, which focuses on increasing capacity and providing more regional connectivity beyond major gateways like Sydney and Melbourne.
For Adelaide Airport, the service strengthens its international offerings and supports South Australia’s tourism targets, particularly as New Zealand remains one of its top inbound visitor markets.

Travelers Will Have Greater Connectivity
For travelers, the Christchurch–Adelaide link delivers greater convenience and flexibility. It offers South Australians a direct gateway to some of New Zealand’s most iconic destinations, including Queenstown, Tekapo, and Mount Cook.
Meanwhile, New Zealanders gain seamless access to South Australia’s renowned food, wine, and cultural attractions.
The route is also expected to enhance regional economies by boosting visitor numbers and deepening cross-border partnerships.
The sister-city relationship between Christchurch and Adelaide further reinforces the value of this new connection, supporting business, education, and tourism exchanges.

Booking and Fleet Information
Flights are available to book through Air New Zealand’s website and travel agents. The airline’s use of A320 and A321neo aircraft reflects its ongoing investment in sustainable, fuel-efficient operations across short-haul international routes.
While the route is currently seasonal, Air New Zealand has indicated that its future operation will depend on passenger demand and the continued recovery of trans-Tasman travel. If successful, the airline may consider extending it into a year-round service.

Bottom Line
The launch of Air New Zealand’s Christchurch–Adelaide service adds another strong link in the airline’s trans-Tasman network.
With twice-weekly flights delivering about 15,000 seats through the summer season, the route offers greater convenience for travelers, new tourism opportunities, and strengthened ties between South Australia and New Zealand’s South Island.
As competition intensifies across the Tasman, this new connection positions Air New Zealand to meet growing demand and reinforce its role as a key player in regional connectivity.
