LONDON- A British Airways (BA) passenger was arrested mid-flight after a violent outburst on a journey from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to London Heathrow (LHR). The disturbance forced crew members to restrain the man, significantly disrupting operations and alarming passengers.
The passenger, Simon Jones, 51, of Willington, Bedford, appeared before Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Monday, where he admitted several offences relating to his abusive behavior toward both crew and passengers.

British Airways Passenger Arrested
Simon Jones was traveling on a British Airways (BA) flight from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to London Heathrow (LHR) on May 23 this year.
During pre-flight safety checks, he began clapping, speaking loudly, and behaving erratically. Prosecutor Ashleigh Ettienne told the court that Jones ignored attempts to calm him and started shouting demands such as, “Give me a f**ing glass for my drink.”*
The passenger seated next to him said Jones became increasingly agitated, frequently standing up to use the toilet and swearing loudly.
When asked to stop, Jones’s behavior escalated further. At one point, after his pillow brushed against his neighbor’s foot, he shouted, “If you do that again, I’ll put that in your f**ing face.”* The frightened passenger then requested a seat change.
According to The Mirror, the captain ordered that Jones should no longer be served alcohol after he continued pacing the aisle and gritting his teeth.
Ignoring multiple warnings, Jones sat in the door area connected to the emergency slide and argued with the cabin crew. When he refused to comply, the captain authorized restraint, and crew members used handcuffs to secure him to his seat.
Even after being restrained, Jones continued shouting and threatened a crew member, saying, “Oi, blonde boy, loosen them cuffs or I’ll wrap them around your neck.”
He had to be checked every 15 minutes until landing, which significantly affected crew duties, including regular passenger service.

Court Hearing and Sentencing
In court, defense lawyer Gurbinder Tamana explained that Jones suffered from bipolar disorder and was not taking his prescribed medication at the time. He had consumed one alcoholic drink before the incident.
Ms. Tamana said he was experiencing personal difficulties, had since started new medication, and was now employed at a bar. She described his behavior as “completely out of character.”
Jones pleaded guilty to:
- Using threatening, abusive, or insulting words toward a crew member.
- Behaving in a threatening or disorderly manner toward the crew.
- Intentionally interfering with the crew’s duties.
- Using threatening or abusive behavior causing alarm or distress.
Judge Kathryn Verghis sentenced him to a 12-month community order, including 150 hours of unpaid work and 20 rehabilitation activity days.
He was also banned from international travel for six months and ordered to pay £400 in costs, a £114 victim surcharge, and £150 compensation to the affected passenger.
Judge Verghis told him, “The incident in itself was sustained from the very start of the flight… your behavior towards a fellow passenger was completely unacceptable.”

Crew Response and Flight Safety
The court heard that the crew’s duties were “significantly impacted” due to the need for constant supervision of Jones.
Staff had to check him at 15-minute intervals, diverting attention from serving passengers and maintaining normal operations.
British Airways reaffirmed that the safety and security of its customers and crew remain its top priority, emphasizing that any disruptive or violent behavior will be met with strict action.
