DALLAS- American Airlines (AA) has announced a policy change that will alter how passengers experience the boarding process across its network. Beginning Monday, the airline will remove bag sizers from its airport gates nationwide.
This update is AA’s broader effort to streamline operations and reduce delays while boarding. While the size of carry-on bags will no longer be routinely checked at the gate, passengers are reminded to follow existing baggage size rules to avoid disruptions during boarding.

American Airlines Baggage Rule Changes
According to a company statement shared with KTLA that was quoted in The Independent, American Airlines team members will continue monitoring baggage at both the lobby and gate areas.
Oversized items that exceed cabin limits will still need to be checked before departure. The decision to remove bag sizers is expected to quicken boarding times and reduce gate congestion, a common issue during peak travel hours.
Under current policy, passengers may carry one personal item and one standard carry-on bag.
The personal item must fit beneath the seat in front and should not exceed 18 x 14 x 8 inches, while the carry-on bag, including handles and wheels, must remain within 22 x 14 x 9 inches. The luggage must fit either under the seat or in the overhead compartment.

Move follows Prior Updates to the Boarding Technology
The new policy follows a series of boarding process updates introduced last year. American Airlines began testing digital boarding verification systems at select airports, including the following:
- Albuquerque (ABQ)
- Tucson (TUS)
- Arlington (DCA)
This technology automatically notifies gate staff if a traveler attempts to board outside their designated group, helping maintain order and priority for higher-tier passengers.
When the system flags an early boarding attempt, agents can override it manually if necessary. This process, first introduced in 2023, was designed to support American’s ten-group boarding structure.
The airline typically boards passengers between 30 and 50 minutes before departure, starting with ConciergeKey members, followed by first-class travelers, active-duty U.S. military personnel, and AAdvantage Executive Platinum members.

Passenger benefits and operational efficiency
By removing bag sizers, American Airlines seeks to reduce gate bottlenecks and improve customer satisfaction without relaxing its carry-on standards.
The airline’s spokesperson stated that the change reflects a growing focus on efficiency, allowing teams to better manage passenger flow.
The shift also underscores the carrier’s confidence in passengers’ compliance with luggage policies and in staff judgment at earlier checkpoints.
This balance between convenience and consistency aligns with American’s strategy to enhance boarding efficiency while maintaining operational control.

Bottom line
The decision by American Airlines to eliminate bag sizers represents a small but meaningful shift in its passenger service model.
While the physical sizers will disappear from gate areas, size rules for carry-on items remain unchanged.
The airline expects the change to make boarding quicker and smoother, benefiting both travelers and ground staff across its network of U.S. airports.
