PARIS- All Nippon Airways (NH) or ANA, Japan’s largest airline, has unveiled “THE Room FX,” the world’s largest business class seat designed specifically for the Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
Unveiled at the 55th Paris Air Show in Le Bourget, the new seat—developed with Safran Seats and Acumen—will debut on ANA’s international long-haul routes starting in 2026.
ANA 787-9 Business Class Seats
THE Room FX introduces a reimagined business class product tailored for mid-sized aircraft, offering spacious, private suites equipped with full-height sliding doors.
ANA’s vision behind this next-generation design is to merge luxury and practicality while maximizing cabin space and enhancing passenger comfort.
This product builds upon the success of the original “THE Room” seat installed on the airline’s Boeing 777-300ER fleet. However, THE Room FX has been specially designed to fit within the Boeing 787-9’s narrower fuselage without compromising comfort.
The alternating front-and-rear seat arrangement, thinner privacy doors, and sculpted backrest lines create a cabin layout that mimics widebody spaciousness in a mid-sized jet.
THE Room FX is the result of years of collaboration between ANA, French seat manufacturer Safran Seats, and UK-based design firm Acumen. Safran led the engineering and manufacturing process, while Acumen contributed to the seat’s modern aesthetic and ergonomic detailing.
Victoria Foy, President & CEO of Safran Seats, called it a “step-change in comfort and innovation.” Ian Dryburgh, CEO of Acumen, emphasized the product’s “rare balance of flexibility and elegant engineering,” designed to exceed premium passenger expectations.
Design Highlights: Functionality Meets Elegance
The FX in THE Room FX stands for “Future Experience.” Key features include:
- Expanded personal space: A larger side console for personal items, increased seat width, and improved bed length.
- Versatile reclining: A pre-recline mechanism transforms the backrest into a lounge-style sofa. Adjustable leg rests and flat-bed capability allow personalized configurations.
- Enhanced amenities: A 1.4x larger monitor, USB-C and wireless charging, Bluetooth audio, and ample storage.
- Sustainable design: Thinner dividers and lighter materials reduce weight while maintaining structural integrity and luxury.
Deployment Timeline and Fleet Integration
ANA plans to begin deploying THE Room FX on long-haul routes serviced by its Boeing 787-9 fleet beginning in 2026.
The rollout will complement the existing “THE Room” seats on the 777-300ERs, offering consistency across ANA’s premium offerings.
The airline has not yet disclosed the specific launch routes, but the seats will likely appear on trans-Pacific and Europe-Asia routes from ANA’s Tokyo Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT) hubs.
Founded in 1952, All Nippon Airways has maintained its SKYTRAX 5-Star Airline status for 12 consecutive years. The launch of THE Room FX reflects ANA’s broader strategy to lead in premium service and sustainable aviation innovation.
