JEWAR- India’s airport landscape is gearing up for a major transformation, as per the latest coordination report by ACL (Airport Coordination Limited), several new international routes are in the pipeline. Many of them are linked to two of India’s most anticipated greenfield airports: Navi Mumbai and Jewar.
Both of these airports are still under construction and yet to welcome their first flights. However, the airlines are already mapping out their global ambitions with these new gateways.
Navi Mumbai and Jewar Airport Flights
The upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI) is scheduled to open in phases starting in late 2025. The airport has begun attracting international interest.
As per coordination filings, the airport is slated to launch routes to Abu Dhabi, Jeddah, Dammam, and Muscat. These are the four key Middle Eastern destinations from India. This reflects the large diaspora and strong trade ties between India and the Gulf.
These routes are likely to become vital corridors for business and VFR (visiting friends and relatives) travel. Especially for residents of the Mumbai metropolitan region looking to avoid the congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
Further north, Jewar Airport, officially known as Noida International Airport (DXN), is also part of India’s next-generation aviation infrastructure push. The airport, which is being developed to serve the National Capital Region (NCR), will open by the end of 2025.
Planned international services from Jewar include flights to Jeddah, Dammam, and Muscat. This signals a clear focus on connecting the NCR with important religious and economic hubs in the Gulf.
These routes are especially important for travelers from western Uttar Pradesh and surrounding areas. Passengers from these regions currently rely on the Delhi airport for international flights.
More International Flights from Tier-II Cities
It’s not just the mega airports making moves. The report also shows several slots for tier-2 cities as well.
As per the report, Muscat might get flights from Bhopal and Indore. If launched, it would mark a significant step forward in improving international connectivity from tier-II cities in central India.
These additions align with the Indian government’s focus on regional air connectivity. These new flights will support labor and business travel to Oman.
Meanwhile, Chennai might gain a new route to Riyadh. If started, it will expand Chennai’s network to Saudi Arabia. Southern India lacks flights to Riyadh. These new flights shall reinforce Chennai’s role as a key southern hub for travel to the Middle East.
IndiGo Eyes Big UK Expansion
In a bold move, IndiGo Airlines (6E) has applied for twice-daily slots at London Heathrow, Gatwick, and Manchester. If the flights start, this would represent a major leap in the airline’s long-haul ambitions and further signal its intent to become a key player on India–UK routes.
While IndiGo has so far limited its wide-body operations, such slot requests indicate a serious intent to compete with full-service carriers on high-demand, high-yield transcontinental sectors.
The UK is among the top international markets for Indian travelers, and increasing non-stop options would be a win for flyers on both sides.
The Bigger Picture
These developments are a promising aspect for India’s international aviation future. The upcoming Navi Mumbai and Jewar airports are expected to ease pressure on overloaded metros and open new growth avenues for airlines.
Simultaneously, regional cities gaining direct Gulf links and IndiGo’s expansion plans in the UK market show how Indian aviation is broadening its global reach.
While the launch timelines for Navi Mumbai and Jewar remain fluid, the coordination filings offer a glimpse into how airlines are strategizing around these new assets. Air travel demand continues to rise, and infrastructure is catching up.
