PHOENIX- Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego revealed that STARLUX Airlines (JX) plans to launch direct flights between Phoenix Sky Harbour International Airport (PHX) and Taipei’s Taoyuan Airport (TPE).
The announcement marks a significant milestone as the first nonstop air service connecting Phoenix and Arizona directly to Asia.
Starlux Phoenix Flight
Mayor Gallego shared the news during her annual State of the City Address. She highlighted that the service would commence early next year, pending final government approvals.
The route will operate three to four flights weekly, establishing a crucial link between Arizona and Taiwan.
The flight announcement follows Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s commitment to invest $165 billion in its Phoenix facilities. This represents the largest foreign direct investment in United States history. This semiconductor manufacturing presence has created thousands of high-wage jobs and enhanced Phoenix’s global reputation as a technology hub.
The service will initially utilise an Airbus A350-900 aircraft configured with 306 seats. Ticket sales will commence once the necessary government approvals are formalised. This will allow passengers to book their travel on this groundbreaking route.
“Phoenix’s first non-stop flight to Asia reflects the incredible strides we’ve made with our local economy, and our emergence as an international city,” Gallego stated during her address.
She directly connected TSMC’s historic investment to increased air service demand, showcasing how industrial development translates to enhanced connectivity.
Strengthening the US Network
Founded in 2018 by Captain Kuo-Wei Chang, former chairman of EVA Air (BR), STARLUX Airlines (JX), a Taiwanese carrier, launched operations in 2020 with a vision to create a five-star carrier competing with the world’s premier airlines. The company built its reputation on carefully selected aircraft and an emphasis on luxury travel experiences.
STARLUX Chairman K.W. Chang expressed confidence in the route’s potential.
“I knew from the moment I set foot in Phoenix that STARLUX should invest in flying here.”

He cited the rapidly growing business connections between Taipei (TPE) and Phoenix (PHX) as a key factor, along with the market’s alignment with the airline’s premium service philosophy.
Economic Impact
According to the airport’s most recent economic impact study, Phoenix’s international flights contribute more than $3 billion annually to the local economy.
This specific STARLUX service is expected to generate an economic impact exceeding $100 million each year, delivering substantial value to the region.
Aviation Director Chad Makovsky praised the development, crediting Mayor Gallego and the City Council for their commitment to expanding Sky Harbour’s capabilities.
“This significant win for Phoenix and our entire region is a testament to the vision and dedication of Mayor Gallego and our City Council as they support the continued growth and modernisation of our airport to serve as a top-tier international gateway,” Makovsky said.
Bottom Line
This direct connection to Taipei (TPE) represents a strategic enhancement of Phoenix’s global transportation network, complementing the city’s growing economic and technological partnerships with Asia.
The route will facilitate more efficient business travel, tourism exchange, and cultural connections between Arizona and Taiwan while reducing travel time for passengers who previously required connecting flights.
