SEATTLE- Alaska Airlines (AS) is removing four routes from its network, affecting services from Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO) airports. The cancellations primarily impact East Coast and Caribbean connections.
Hawaiian Airlines (HA) simultaneously reshuffles its Boeing 787 Dreamliner deployment, introducing the aircraft on Seattle (SEA) to Honolulu (HNL) routes while reducing service to Los Angeles, reported Ishrion Aviation.
Alaska Airlines Cuts 4 Routes
Alaska Airlines is implementing significant network changes by eliminating four routes from its West Coast hubs. The carrier will discontinue Los Angeles (LAX) to Nassau (NAS) service, which was scheduled to return for the winter season.
Additionally, flights from Los Angeles to Washington Dulles (IAD) will cease operations after August 19, 2025.
The San Francisco (SFO) hub is also affected, with service to Washington Dulles (IAD) and Chicago O’Hare (ORD) both ending after August 19. While Alaska maintains flights between LAX/SFO and Washington National Airport (DCA), the Dulles connections will no longer be available.
Alaska’s Seattle (SEA) to Nassau (NAS) route appears to be in jeopardy as well, as the airline has not yet loaded this seasonal service into schedules for the upcoming winter. This suggests the possibility that Alaska may completely exit the Nassau market.
Hawaiian Airlines Deploys 787 to Seattle
As Alaska reduces certain routes, Hawaiian Airlines is reconfiguring its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner deployment with a focus on the Seattle market. Starting August 20, Hawaiian will launch daily 787 service between Seattle (SEA) and Honolulu (HNL) with the following schedule:
- HA21: Departing Seattle at 8:15 AM, arriving in Honolulu at 11:17 AM
- HA22: Departing Honolulu at 1:10 PM, arriving in Seattle at 9:44 PM
The airline will further enhance this route beginning September 11 by adding a second daily 787 flight, completely replacing the Airbus A330-200 aircraft previously serving the market.
This Seattle expansion coincides with Hawaiian gradually decreasing its 787 presence in Los Angeles, with the final 787 flight (HA801) from LAX to HNL scheduled for October 26.
The airline is also extending its 787 service between Honolulu and New York (JFK) through September 10, beyond the originally planned August 20 suspension date.
Ishrion Aviation speculates that both Alaska and Hawaiian are optimizing their networks to focus on more profitable routes while deploying aircraft types that better match market demand.
The 787’s fuel efficiency makes it particularly attractive for Hawaiian’s longer routes, while Alaska appears to be consolidating service in markets where it faces intense competition.
