NEW YORK- A passenger was arrested after causing a significant disturbance on United Airlines (UA) flight UA3049 from Dubai International Airport (DXB) to Newark (EWR).
The incident occurred approximately 10-11 hours into the 14-hour journey on the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.
United Passenger Arrested at Newark
Law enforcement boarded immediately upon landing at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), with approximately twenty officers involved in the response. The disruption resulted in temporary restrictions on passenger movement and the closure of rear lavatories.
The disturbance on United Airlines (UA) flight UA3049 was severe enough to visibly shake the flight crew, with some flight attendants reportedly near tears during the incident.
According to eyewitness accounts, a law enforcement officer who was traveling on the flight took immediate action, detaining a passenger in the rear galley after running through the aircraft aisles.
Flight attendants implemented emergency protocols, making an announcement requiring all passengers to remain seated for approximately 30-40 minutes, even restricting access to the lavatories.
This security measure temporarily disrupted the scheduled meal service and resulted in the continued closure of the rear bathrooms even after general movement restrictions were lifted. The incident reportedly involved a violent argument between the unruly passenger and a flight attendant, though official details remain limited.
Aviation Security Protocols
In-flight disturbances requiring law enforcement intervention occur more frequently than many travelers realize. United Airlines operates strict security protocols for handling unruly passengers, particularly on international long-haul routes like Dubai to Newark, which cross multiple jurisdictions.
Aviation security experts note that airlines often handle such incidents without public statements when they determine there was minimal impact on flight operations or safety.
The Boeing 777-300ER aircraft operating as flight UA3049 was reportedly a replacement for a previously canceled flight UA163, suggesting passengers may have already experienced travel disruptions before the in-flight incident.
Passenger Information Access and Reporting
Accessing information about in-flight incidents can be challenging for concerned travelers. While the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey oversees security at Newark Liberty International Airport, detailed incident reports typically remain confidential unless charges result in court proceedings.
United Airlines follows standard industry practice regarding passenger disturbances, prioritizing crew and passenger safety while minimizing public discussion of security incidents. The airline coordinates with both foreign and domestic authorities when incidents occur on international flights, complicating the information release process.
Aviation safety regulations require thorough documentation of all significant incidents, though these reports are primarily used for internal review and regulatory compliance rather than public information. Passengers seeking details about specific incidents may contact the airline’s customer service department, though information shared is typically limited by privacy considerations and ongoing investigations.
Similar Incident
A security breach occurred at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Tuesday afternoon when a passenger managed to board a United Airlines flight with a gun. The incident prompted a partial terminal shutdown and flight delays, CBS News reported.
At 12:20 p.m., a Transportation Security Administration officer detected a firearm image in a bag passing through Security Checkpoint 2 at Terminal 1. Following TSA protocol, the officer kept the bag in the X-ray tunnel and contacted the Chicago Police Department.
Before police arrived, the passenger reached into the X-ray machine, grabbed the bag containing the weapon, and proceeded to the gate. This action triggered an immediate security response.
TSA officials and law enforcement partners suspended screening operations in Terminals 1 and 2 while tracking the passenger’s movements to a United flight. Video shared by travelers showed O’Hare employees clearing paths through Terminal 1 as officers rushed through searching for the armed individual.
One social media user reported, “CPD just yanked a guy off my flight at O’Hare,” adding, “Now they made us deplane and do a full security sweep of the plane.”
Chicago Police successfully located and arrested the passenger. According to a police source, the individual possessed both a Firearm Owners Identification Card and a concealed carry license. Charges remained pending Tuesday evening.
TSA screening resumed at 1:00 p.m., approximately 40 minutes after operations were halted.
The TSA reported that officers confiscated 78 handguns at O’Hare security checkpoints last year, an increase from 72 in 2023. At nearby Midway International Airport, 41 firearms were confiscated in the past year, down from a record 50 firearms in 2023.
