MUSCAT- The Flag carrier of Oman, Oman Air (WY), has taken a significant step in improving its operations by introducing an all-economy Boeing 737 MAX aircraft on routes to India. This move aligns with the airline’s strategy to meet growing demand.
Oman Air has enhanced affordability while maintaining service quality. The airline’s latest sub-fleet, Oman Air Connect, will operate these new aircraft to select destinations in India, Africa, and West Asia. Oman Air Connect’s main target will be cost-conscious passengers.
Oman Air New Fleet to India
The first of five Boeing 737 MAX aircraft of Oman Air in an all-economy configuration has officially entered service this month. Oman Air has decided to deploy these aircraft to Kozhikode and Lucknow, two cities with high passenger traffic between India and Oman.
Until now, Oman Air served these destinations using Boeing 737 aircraft in a dual-class configuration. Oman Air has two versions of dual-class configuration B737s with 162 or 183 seats. The new aircraft, equipped with 189 seats, allows Oman Air to accommodate more passengers and offer more competitive fares.
According to industry sources, passenger loads on flights from Muscat to Kozhikode and Lucknow are consistently high. Loads range from the upper 80s to over 90 percent. This demand is primarily driven by segments such as visiting friends and relatives (VFR), religious travelers, and medical tourism. Oman Air aims to provide cost-effective travel options while increasing its market share on these routes. This was possible by transitioning to an all-economy configuration.
Increasing Competition and Changing Travel Patterns
The airline’s decision comes at a time of increasing competition and evolving travel trends in the India-Oman aviation corridor. Currently, Oman Air operates 96 flights per week to ten Indian cities. The overall flight frequencies between India and Oman have reduced by 10 percent compared to the previous year.
However, The total seat capacity in the broader West Asia region has grown by 5 percent. Airlines such as Air India Express, Akasa Air, and IndiGo have expanded their services. The airlines expanded particularly to destinations like Abu Dhabi and Dammam, intensifying competition in the region.
Oman Air’s CEO, Con Korfiatis, emphasized the importance of adapting to these shifts. He stated:
“The way people travel has evolved, with greater accessibility and choice; at the same time, passengers still want to enjoy a comfortable journey. With this all-economy fleet, we are adapting to these changing needs, providing our guests with more flexibility and choice without compromising on quality.”

Oman Air faces competition on both of these Indian routes. Air India Express and Salam Air flies between Kozhikode, Lucknow, and Muscat. Unlike Oman Air, which is a full-service carrier, these airlines are low-cost carriers. This increases competition as budget-conscious travelers opt for the lower fares offered by low-cost carriers.
However, Oman Air aims to differentiate itself by maintaining a full-service experience even on its all-economy aircraft. This strategy might help the airline to attract passengers who seek both affordability and enhanced onboard services.
Enhanced Passenger Experience and Service Commitment
Despite the shift to an all-economy configuration, Oman Air remains committed to maintaining its service standards. Passengers traveling on these aircraft will continue to receive complimentary meals and beverages.
Oman Air Connect aims to ensure a pleasant onboard experience. The airline is also working on upgrading its in-flight entertainment systems, promising a modern and engaging experience for travelers.
Oman Air’s new strategy reflects a broader trend in the aviation industry. Airlines are now focusing on maximizing efficiency while balancing service quality and affordability. The move to an all-economy fleet aligns with passenger expectations for greater flexibility and competitive pricing. Oman Air should get a good response, particularly in markets with significant demand for budget-friendly travel options.
