US Airlines Operating the A321neo
“Overview of Airbus A321neo Operations Among Major US Airlines”
Six prominent US carriers currently incorporate the Airbus A321neo into their fleets: American Airlines (AA), Delta Airlines (DL), Frontier Airlines (F9), Hawaiian Airlines (HA), JetBlue (B6), and Spirit Airlines (NK). This count decreased from seven earlier in the year when Alaska Airlines removed all Airbus planes from its fleet, including ten relatively young A321neos. As reported by Simple Flying, these aircraft are slated to join America’s fleet.
The A321neo has emerged as a crucial asset in domestic and international operations for US carriers, witnessing a rapid increase in aircraft within the country. Here’s a breakdown of the current A321neo operators based in the US:
American Airlines:
- Largest A321neo operator in the country with a fleet of 80 planes.
- Configured to seat up to 196 passengers in a two-class layout, featuring 20 first-class and 176 economy seats.
Delta Air Lines:
- Second-largest US airline operating 67 A321neos, despite only receiving its first aircraft of this type in March 2022.
- Initially ordered 70 A321neos and subsequently expanded its order book with Airbus by an additional 60 aircraft.
Frontier Airlines:
- Maintains a fleet of 44 A321neos, with plans for substantial growth.
- Holds an order with Airbus for over 150 A321neos and the smaller A320neos.
Hawaiian Airlines Now Merged with Alaska:
- Operates a fleet of 18 A321neos since its inaugural delivery in late 2017.
- Despite facing challenges with Pratt & Whitney’s GTF engines, Hawaiian Airlines has expanded its domestic A321neo network.
JetBlue:
- Currently flies 36 A321neos and anticipates doubling this number in the coming years.
- Renowned for its outstanding Mint product, it contributes to JetBlue’s success in securing premium demand on domestic and international routes.
Spirit Airlines:
- Spirit Airlines one of the new A321neo operators received its first Neo on June 2023.
- Currently operates 26 A321neos, with a recent decision to prioritize A321neos over A319neos by reducing its order for the latter.
These US carriers collectively highlight the growing prominence of the Airbus A321neo in the nation’s aviation landscape.
United Inaugural A321neo Flight
United Airlines recently became part of the A321neo club as it launched its maiden service from Houston to Chicago on November 30, 2023.
Having received the aircraft in October, United conducted a series of flight tests in preparation for its commercial premiere.
The aircraft with registration N44501 will depart from Houston at 17:30, operating as flight UA321 bound for Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD).
This particular route stands as the sole flight between these cities served on an A321neo by any US carrier.
United Airlines as of November 2024, after one year of operation, has a fleet of 18 A321neos.
