CHICAGO- New York-based JetBlue Airways (B6) Airbus A320 aircraft was forced to stop on the taxiway after landing at Chicago O’Hare Airport (ORD) after a luggage container hit the engine.
The incident occurred on Monday (October 21, 2024) when flight B6811 from Boston Logan Airport (BOS) landed safely on time in Chicago but took an hour to reach its gate.
JetBlue A320 Hit by Container at ORD
Now let us establish a timeline using FlightRadar24 data. JetBlue flight B6811 took off from Boston with 40 minutes delay at 5:49 PM and arrived in Boston at 6:50 PM.
Flight 811 from Boston encountered a collision with a luggage container during taxi operations.
The incident occurred at 19:09, immediately after the aircraft crossed the Kennedy Expressway on the airport’s east side. The plane came to an immediate stop on the taxiway following the collision.
A loose luggage container, potentially from another airline’s ground equipment, struck the aircraft’s engine cowling. Emergency response vehicles arrived at the scene, as tracked by Flightradar24.
The aircraft, identified as N623JB, remained stationary for approximately one hour while emergency personnel assessed the situation. Airport crews later towed the plane to gate G2, where it arrived at 20:25, marking a one-hour delay from its scheduled arrival time.
JetBlue confirmed that flight JBU811 was involved in the collision incident in Chicago and said that the maintenance team would conduct a thorough inspection of the aircraft.
Luckily no person whether on the ground or onboard the JetBlue aircraft sustained an injury. The airline said that they will find out what has led to this incident. Further, they will collaborate with relevant authorities to determine the cause of it.
The aircraft involved in the incident is Airbus A320-200, registered as N623JB. Further, it is a 19.3-year-old aircraft powered by IAE V2500 engines. The aircraft is still on the ground at the time of publication of this article.
Following this incident, the next lag operated by this aircraft required a replacement and it was operated by another aircraft delaying the flight by a few hours.
This incident closely resembles the American Airlines incident where Boeing 787 was hit by a cargo container at Chicago on October 17, 2024.
Similar Incident
A Boeing 787 operated by American Airlines (AA) suffered significant engine damage at Chicago O’Hare International Airport when it ingested a cargo container. Flight AA47, arriving from London Heathrow, encountered the incident during taxi operations.
The event occurred at approximately 3:00 PM local time as the aircraft navigated Bravo Taxiway toward Terminal 5. The right engine sustained severe damage after contact with an AKE Unit Load Device, a standard aviation cargo container.
Initial reports from passengers indicate jet blast from a leading aircraft propelled the containers toward Flight AA47. The incident location marks an intersection of a service road connecting Terminals 5 and 3, crossing Taxiways Bravo and Alpha.
The container reportedly detached from a service vehicle crossing the intersecting road. The force of a preceding aircraft’s jet blast likely contributed to the container’s movement into Flight AA47’s path.
X user Windy City Wheelman first documented the incident, sharing images of the damaged engine and container. The incident highlights potential risks at intersections between service roads and active taxiways.
No injuries resulted from the incident, despite the severe damage to both the engine and cargo container.
