SINGAPORE- A Singapore Airlines (SQ) Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, registered as 9V-SWM resumed service on July 27 after being grounded due to severe turbulence in May this year.
The plane operated flight SQ830 from Singapore (SIN) to Shanghai (PVG), marking its return to commercial operations.
Singapore Airlines Turbulence Hit 777 Status
Singapore Airlines completed extensive maintenance and repair work on the aircraft under the supervision of Singapore’s aviation authorities. The plane passed rigorous safety checks by SIA’s engineering and flight operations teams before returning to service, reported The Straits Times.
The aircraft met all safety requirements set by its manufacturer and successfully completed a functional check flight on July 23. This test flight was crucial in ensuring the plane’s airworthiness after the turbulence incident.
The turbulence occurred during a flight from London’s Heathrow Airport to Singapore in May. After the incident, the aircraft was flown to Bangkok for initial assessment before returning to Singapore on May 26.
Severe Turbulence in May
A Singapore Airlines Boeing 777-300ER encountered severe turbulence on Flight SQ321 from London to Singapore, resulting in one death and multiple injuries. The incident forced the aircraft to divert to Bangkok, landing at 15:45 local time.
The flight carried 211 passengers, including 41 Singaporeans and 170 from various countries such as Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Britain. Eighteen crew members were also on board.
Singapore’s Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat expressed condolences and pledged government assistance to affected passengers and their families. The turbulence occurred around 3:45 pm local time, approximately 90 minutes before the scheduled arrival in Singapore.
Severe thunderstorms in the Thailand region likely caused the turbulence. Meteorologists had forecast heavy rain and occasional thunderstorms for the area, creating challenging flying conditions.
