MUNICH- Lufthansa (LH) announced it will begin Airbus A380-800 flights between Munich (MUC) and Washington, D.C. (IAD) starting May 31st. Currently, this route is served daily by an Airbus A340-600, according to our database.
Washington, D.C. will become Lufthansa’s fifth A380 destination, joining Boston (BOS), Los Angeles (LAX), New York (JFK), and Delhi (DEL).
Lufthansa A380 to Washington
As of now, all of Lufthansa’s Airbus A380s are based at Munich airport. The airline has eight A380s, with five currently in operation, reported FlightRadar24.
Lufthansa operates 28 weekly flights across its four current A380 routes. With the addition of Washington, D.C., weekly A380 flights will increase to 35 throughout the summer.
The last A380 flight to Washington, D.C. is scheduled for September 30th. Starting in October, the route will be serviced by the 293-seat Airbus A350-900.

Additionally, United Airlines (UA) operates a daily flight between Washington and Munich using Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, seating 214 passengers in two classes.
On June 1st, 2023, Lufthansa resumed operations with its Airbus A380-800s after a three-year pause caused by the pandemic.
Initially, the airline had stated it would not bring these aircraft back, but in mid-2022, Lufthansa confirmed the A380s’ return due to a significant surge in demand and delays in the delivery of new jets.
Lufthansa operates 74 weekly flights from Munich and 128 from Frankfurt to the United States. Combined, the airline offers 202 weekly services between Germany and the United States.
