NEW YORK- The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a warning stating that flights to and from the New York area may face disruptions following a magnitude 4.8 earthquake in the New Jersey area.
Earlier today, both New York (JFK) Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) implemented a ground stop. As of the latest update, it appears that both ground stops have been lifted, although a “ground delay” remains in effect at Newark Airport.

In the event of significant disruption at an airport, the FAA has the authority to implement a ground stop. This action halts departing flights destined for the affected airport, preventing the airport from becoming overwhelmed.
Ground stops may be initiated in response to various factors, including catastrophic events.
Earlier today, the FAA implemented ground stops for both New York JFK Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport. As of the latest update, the ground stop at Newark has transitioned into a “Ground Delay.”
According to the most recent information, departures to Newark Airport from the contiguous United States are experiencing an average delay of 77 minutes due to “airport volume.”
