MIAMI- The Ministry of Tourism, Investments & Aviation is thrilled to mark the launch of American Airlines (AA)’ bi-weekly nonstop flights connecting Miami and Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera, starting from February 3. This strategic inclusion actively contributes to our ongoing initiatives to strengthen air travel connectivity across our captivating 16 islands.
This new route signifies the sixth destination within the Bahamas served by the U.S. airline. The existing routes include North Eleuthera, Nassau in New Providence, Freeport in Grand Bahama, George Town in Exuma, and Marsh Harbour in Abaco.

The Honorable I. Chester Cooper, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation, highlighted the significance of the recently introduced nonstop service, praising it as a clear indication of the robust partnership with industry leaders and the increasing interest in The Bahamas Out Islands.
“This recent addition to our airlift, just one month into 2024, underscores the Ministry’s comprehensive approach and steadfast dedication to aggressively expanding air travel access to all our 16 island destinations,” remarked Cooper.
“We are committed to delivering a diverse and authentic experience to travelers through collaborations with industry partners and airlines like American Airlines. We eagerly anticipate nurturing ongoing partnerships and offering travelers a distinctly memorable Bahamas experience through this newly established American Airlines route.”
Executive Insights
Governor’s Harbour Airport has recently undergone expansions and upgrades to both the Departures and Arrivals Terminals, along with enhancements to the fire station.
Further, this infrastructural development aligns with the government’s commitment to upgrading island airports as part of the Family Islands Renaissance Initiative, as outlined in The National Aviation Strategic Plan.
“We are thrilled to commemorate the initiation of our sixth destination in The Bahamas, Governor’s Harbour, reinforcing our dedication to this pristine paradise. This newly established route signifies the next stride in expanding American’s footprint in the Caribbean and Atlantic, where we proudly stand as the largest U.S. airline,” stated José María Giraldo, American Airlines Managing Director of Operations for Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America.
“With the addition of this new destination, we will now provide up to 30 peak-day flights to The Bahamas, playing a crucial role in supporting the country’s travel and tourism industry.”
Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
The commencement of the first flight was commemorated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held in both Miami and Governor’s Harbour.
The occasion saw the presence of prominent government officials and executives from the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments & Aviation, including Hon. Clay Sweeting, Minister of Works and Family Island Affairs, and Dr. Kenneth Romer, Deputy Director General, MOTIA.
As part of the ceremony, American Airlines executives were presented with a unique ceremonial gift symbolizing the enduring relationship with The Islands of The Bahamas.
The nonstop service is scheduled to operate on Tuesdays and Saturdays, connecting Miami to Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera.
