NEW YORK- JetBlue Airways (B6) has informed its staff this week about plans to trim certain routes (mainly from New York) and services in an effort to navigate challenges and restore profitability, particularly in the aftermath of the thwarted attempt to acquire Spirit Airlines (NK), as reported by CNBC.
According to an internal memo reviewed by CNBC, JetBlue will discontinue flights from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport to Portland, Ore., and San Jose, Calif., as well as from Westchester, N.Y., to Martha’s Vineyard. Additionally, the airline will temporarily halt services from New York to Ponce, Puerto Rico, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, starting in October.

Dave Jehn, the vice president of network planning and airline partnerships, conveyed in a note to staff, “We can’t fly everywhere we’d like, so we need to be highly selective about where we point our aircraft in order to turn a profit, support our overall network strategy, and offer a reliable operation.”
The airline is shifting its focus to leisure routes, expanding services in the Caribbean and to Paris, as outlined in the memo.
JetBlue is also discontinuing the designation of “BlueCity,” a form of focus city for the airline, at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, stated Jehn.
He mentioned that the carrier will offer various alternatives to the staff at that location.
Jehn explained that these adjustments had been in progress for nearly a month, predating the court decision that hindered JetBlue’s intended $3.8 billion acquisition of Spirit on antitrust grounds.
It’s important to note that Judge William Young’s opinion only obstructs the specific merger that the companies agreed upon in July 2022 and does not impede a different proposed combination, should the airlines choose that path.
