American carrier United Airlines has canceled its scheduled flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Cape Town, South Africa because of a biting fuel shortage at Cape Town International Airport.
The traveler who was booked on the flight received messages on Saturday, October 1 informing them of the revocation, as the airline seeks to avoid its plane getting stranded in South Africa.

The airline however noted that the flight’s status may change. In a piece of information earlier this week, Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) told airlines that there may be further delays to the delivery of jet fuel to Cape Town International Airport. In answer, fuel rationing was introduced at the airport, thereby affecting some flight plans.

“As the port, we are on high alert and tracking the vessel to ensure all resources are ready to receive it when it arrives. The vessel will be receiving berthing priority and we do not foresee any challenges servicing the vessel when it comes,” Rajesh Dana, port manager of the Cape Town Port told reporters.

Airports Company South Africa
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) gave a statement to airlines on Saturday that there may be further delays in the delivery of jet fuel to the airport in Cape Town and imposed restrictions on fuel uplift to conserve fuel stocks until a new consignment comes.
On Friday, some domestic airlines were rationed to 50% of the fuel they usually fill up on in Cape Town. Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) also requested airlines to refuel at other airports.
While ACSA told on Thursday that it had four days of stock left, one airline insider, who wants to stay anonymous, accused the group of not being transparent about the true extent of the crisis. ACSA states it will continue to operate with airlines to limit the impact on flight operations, which includes reducing passenger loads. It requests passengers to continuously monitor developments around this issue.
