NEW DELHI- <\/strong>The Centre has approved the revival of TruJet (2T)<\/a>, formerly known as Turbo Megha Airways<\/strong>, as a national-level scheduled operator to address India’s growing air transport demand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sources confirmed that the government granted permission following extensive discussions between airline officials and the <\/a>Union Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Revival of TruJet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Umesh Vankayalapati, Managing Director of TruJet (2T), confirmed the development and outlined the airline’s path forward with Hindu BusinessLine<\/a>. The company approached MoCA to revive the TruJet brand and received the No Objection Certificate after presenting detailed proposals to ministry officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TruJet (2T) operated as a regional low-cost airline from 2015 to 2022, maintaining its headquarters at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD)<\/a> in Hyderabad. The airline suspended operations in February 2022 when the COVID-19<\/a> pandemic triggered a severe financial crisis that affected the aviation industry globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The carrier originally received approval in 2014 to operate as a ‘Scheduled Air Transport (Regional) Services’ provider, focusing primarily on connecting tier-II cities across southern India. Before ceasing operations, TruJet (2T) had identified 18 tier-II cities in southern India as prospective destinations for its regional network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enhanced Operating Status<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The airline has secured approval to operate as a full-fledged domestic airline<\/strong> this time, representing a significant upgrade from its previous regional operator status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This enhanced classification allows TruJet (2T) to compete directly with major domestic carriers across all Indian routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vankayalapati explained that the company must now renew its Air Operators Permit (AoP)<\/strong> from the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)<\/a>. The AoP renewal process typically requires up to 180 days to complete, after which the airline can officially resume commercial operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fleet & Hub Operations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

TruJet (2T) plans to restart operations using an Airbus A320<\/a> aircraft, with Visakhapatnam <\/a>serving as the primary hub airport for narrow-body operations. The airline targets launching its first flight by November 2025, connecting Visakhapatnam to major destinations including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company has initiated full-scale preparations for the November launch timeline, focusing on operational readiness and regulatory compliance. Vankayalapati confirmed that the airline will expand its fleet strategy beyond the A320 platform to include regional aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regional Connectivity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

TruJet (2T) intends to induct ATR turboprop<\/a> aircraft specifically to participate in the government’s regional connectivity UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik)<\/a> scheme. The airline plans to base its ATR operations from Lucknow airport (LKO)<\/a>, targeting the significant growth potential in regional aviation across northern India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vankayalapati emphasised the massive scope for regional aviation growth in the Lucknow region and confirmed plans to introduce ATR aircraft after receiving route allocations under the UDAN scheme. This dual-fleet strategy positions TruJet (2T) to serve both mainline and regional markets simultaneously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The airline has secured financial backing from new investors to support its revival plans. TruJet (2T) plans to invest approximately \u20b9200 crore initially and create employment for around 600 people across various operational functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vankayalapati noted that the aviation industry has attracted new players due to its high growth rate, though heavy taxation continues to present challenges for market entry. TruJet (2T) operates as a subsidiary of Turbo Aviation<\/strong>, a Hyderabad-based company providing aircraft maintenance and ground-handling services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Market Growth Outlook<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Industry data shows that passenger traffic grew by over 8 per cent sequentially in March 2025, reaching approximately 1.45 crore passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vankayalapati expressed optimism about India’s aviation sector prospects, stating that the growth trajectory has only begun for both regional and national markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
