AHMEDABAD-<\/strong> The black box of Air India (AI)<\/a> Flight AI171<\/strong>, which crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad Airport (AMD) en route to London Gatwick (LGW), has been recovered from a building the aircraft struck during descent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) confirmed that the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR)<\/strong> was found on the rooftop of a hostel building near the crash site. The aircraft involved was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operating under Air India\u2019s international service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black Box of Air India 787 Found<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

India\u2019s Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA)<\/strong> clarified that a previously reported video recorder was not the black box. Within 28 hours of the crash, the official black box\u2014more accurately the Flight Data Recorder (FDR)<\/strong>\u2014was retrieved and handed over to investigators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu<\/strong> stated that this development is key to understanding the cause of the crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does the Black Box Reveal?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The black box consists of two primary components: the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR)<\/strong> and the Flight Data Recorder (FDR)<\/strong>. This equipment stores hundreds of flight parameters such as control inputs, engine status, electrical data, and autopilot behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bright orange in color, the black box is designed to endure severe impacts, heat, and water immersion. It serves as a critical tool for aviation investigators to determine the chain of events<\/strong> that led to accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this case, the analysis will focus on the moments after the Boeing 787-8 lifted off from Runway 23 at AMD<\/strong> and issued a \u2018Mayday\u2019 call<\/strong> before vanishing from ATC radar. The DFDR\u2019s data is expected to offer clarity on the cause of the crash, including possible mechanical failure or pilot error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flight AI171<\/strong> took off from Ahmedabad (AMD)<\/strong> at 1:39 PM IST<\/strong>, bound for London Gatwick (LGW)<\/strong>. Shortly after takeoff, a distress signal was transmitted, and communications ceased. The aircraft crashed into a building just beyond the airport boundary, igniting a fireball visible across the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aircraft was commanded by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal<\/strong>, a senior line training pilot with over 8,200 hours<\/strong>, and First Officer Clive Kundar<\/strong>, who had logged 1,100 hours<\/strong>. The 242 passengers onboard included 169 Indian nationals<\/strong>, 53 British<\/strong>, 7 Portuguese<\/strong>, and 1 Canadian<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air India has confirmed that emergency protocols were followed and pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation. Support services for the victims’ families are being coordinated by the airline and local authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India\u2019s aviation regulator has ordered enhanced safety inspections of Air India\u2019s Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, following a fatal crash in Ahmedabad (AMD)<\/a> that killed 241 passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
